Stylish Accessories And How To Wear Them
Accessories hold an outfit together, they can be the finishing touch
, a key part of the structure of an outfit or a statement in their own right. They can be subtle and small or big and bold. They can also be used to highlight areas of your body that you love and draw attention away from those areas that you don't. Choosing the right accessories can make or break an outfit and also show off your personality and style.
Belts - a belt is not just ornamental, it has an important role to play, either fitting a pair of trousers to your waist or creating definition. A baggy shirt can be cinched in with a belt to create a completely different and usually much more flattering silhouette. A brightly coloured belt worn with jeans can highlight a slim waist and a wide belt worn under the bust with an empire line dress is a great way of hiding a thicker waist and highlighting a bigger bust. Wide belts worn low on the hips are also a great way of drawing attention away from the waist and down to the hips, if slightly lower at the front than the back, it also will have a slimming effect. If you are short be careful of which style of belt you wear as it can cut your body in half making you look even shorter. A thin belt in the same colour as your outfit is probably the best option.
Jewellery - jewellery offers so many different options for creating different looks. You should pick out of pieces of jewellery to highlight your best features. Perhaps an eye catching cocktail ring for beautifully manicured nail, chunky bangles for delicate wrists, long sparkly earrings for a graceful neck and a long string of beads to show off a great decoupage. Don't over do it with jewellery, perhaps just choose one really eye catching piece or a necklace and earrings in a more subtle style. With necklaces think about how the length and shape will work with the neckline you are wearing and with earrings think how the length an shape will work with your hair style.
Scarves - scarves are such a great way of adding colour and pattern to a plain outfit. You can wear them in a variety of different ways to match the look your are trying to create. For business like or fifties look, try wrapping a small scarf around your neck and tying at the side. For a more boho look opt for a tasselled scarf casually wound around your neck. For another casual look try folding a large square scarf into a triangle and draping over your shoulders. This works particularly well with a scarf with a large picture of design on it. By wearing a long scarf around your neck with long ends of the scarf hanging down, you create a vertical line which has a very slimming effect. The right coloured scarf tied around your neck can reflect colour onto your face and make your complexion glow.
Shoes - shoes are both a necessity and an accessory for most people most of the time. It is often said that you can a lot about a person by their shoes, so keeping them clean and in good condition is vital if you want to look stylish. There is definitely an art to matching the right pair of shoes to an outfit. A fairly plain dress can look amazing with a really stunning pair of shoes perhaps in a bright colour, with an interesting design or elaborately embellished. If your outfit is really attention grabbing, a neutral and understated but stylish pair of shoes will finish it off perfectly. Some important considerations when choosing which shoes to wear include, how comfortably and confidently, you can walk in them and how they will fit with your length of trousers or skirt.
Handbags - a handbag is another important functional accessory that adds to the overall look of your outfit. Most women feel quite lost without their handbag and a clutch bag is a great thing to hold if you never know what to do with your hands at a party. Generally the same rule applies to hand bags as all other accessories, choose a subtle handbag to go with a busy outfit or a statement bag to go with a more simple outfit and avoid matching shoes and handbags as it just looks too much.
When picking the right accessories to compliment your outfit, think carefully about the look that you are trying to create and whether the accessories match this theme. You should also be careful not to overdo it with accessories. Don't wear more than one statement accessory and if your outfit already makes a statement on its own, opt for subtle accessories. Whatever you choose to wear have fun deciding and finding the right thing that really suits your mood and personality.
