Drug abuse also known as substance abuse is a major obstacle in the advancement of the society

. Psycho active drugs and mood altering drugs are not the only substance associated with drug abuse. Substances whose usage is prohibited by the medical association too come are associated with substance abuse. Every year thousands of people fall victims to substance abuse and many lose lives as well. Substance abuse, however, is not always fatal. It is certainly curable if treated within the proper time under the supervision of a good treatment center. Patients, who have been exposed to drug abuse for a long time, require more time to recover than the ones who have been into substance abuse for a short while.

Research shows that it is mostly teenagers who are prone to drug addiction as they lack the maturity to understand what is harmful for them. However, it is not teenagers alone who are victims of substance abuse. Young adults are seen to take up drugs as well. Reasons for taking up drugs are varied. In most cases, it is strained relationship between parents or partners that gives birth to these kinds of situations. Financial obstacles and lack of socializing are also factors that are responsible for drug abuse. While some cases are simply a result of curiosity of the young mind to explore substances. No matter how grave ones situation may be, the harm done to these people is equal depending on how long has one indulged in substance abuse. When it comes to the treatment for these victims, as such, there is no specific treatment that can be said to be the best for every individual suffering from drug abuse. Generally, it is a combination of therapies that works best for every drug patient. Substance abuse treatment can be classified into two categories, inpatient and outpatient. Inpatient treatment is given to patients with serious drug addiction problems while individuals whose situations are not so serious may recover with the help of outpatient treatment.

Inpatient treatment in many cases begins with detoxification that is given to patients to take out the harmful substances from their bodies, which had accumulated as a result of their long term substance abuse. Medication is given accordingly. Along with this substance abuse treatment also makes them go through the twelve step program which has always proven to be successful in most cases. Counseling and behavioral therapies also run side by side. Behavioral therapies include Cognitive Behavioral therapy and contingency treatment. They are given to the patient as a part of the aftercare programs. Family and friends of the patient should see to that the patient after the treatment attends the aftercare programs for they will save him from going back top relapse.
