Success Coaching - More Than Rhetoric And Hand-holding
Success coaching is far more than motivational sayings and a lot of rah rah rhetoric
. It is far more than simply holding your hand as you plan and follow through on your dreams. Coaching, by its very definition, is helping someone to develop their abilities, be it sports, business, or personal. It involves helping a person find the knowledge and skills they already possess to further their goals. Whatever knowledge or skills are lacking, a coach helps a coachee through training and sharing proven strategies and approaches. Therefore, to coach someone for success means to help them find the skills they already have and add to those the skills needed to successfully reach their goals.
However, success coaching goes beyond helping a coachee find or obtain skills and knowledge. It encompasses helping a person shift their mindset. For example, a new business owner must shift their thinking or mindset from one of employee or manager to a mindset of an entrepreneur. That requires a huge shift from following orders and direction of others to becoming the one who determines steps and goals, as well as strategies for achieving those goals. For those new to the business arena, coaching can also involve helping coachees following a proven path to success.
Success coaching, in order to have a positive outcome, requires a level of commitment from both the coach and the coachee. There should be a planned or systematic approach to revealing skills and outlining goals. However, that plan should not be overly restrictive and allow for the flexibility of the individual in order to best take advantage of each person's strengths and opportunities. In that regard, a coach becomes not only a guide or teacher, but also a cheerleader and strong supporter.
The best coaches have a proven track record, not only when it comes to motivation and encouragement, but also in fields relative to the coachee's area of interest. In other words, in order to gain the greatest outcome from success coaching, your coach should have experience in the industry, as well as a gift for training, motivating, encouraging, and guiding. Your coach should be able to help you devise a step-by-step program or strategic plan to help you reach your goals. Once that plan is in place, your coach should help you navigate your way to predetermined benchmarks and smaller goals. While their job is to guide and teach, it is your job to follow through.
