Success and Streamlining Your Inner Game
We all have, locked away in our brains, a "Success Prevention Department". The purpose of this department is to keep us in our comfort zone. Being in our comfort zone, while it is very nice and cozy, is really a recipe for lack of success. If we wish to become more successful, we will need to fire the head of the success prevention department.
Each one of has what Eban calls, "three brains". Our three brains are the physical, the emotional and the logical. When these "three brains" are in conflict, it sets up inner friction which stops the flow that we need to have to accomplish success. To get back into the flow we need to realign our three brains.
When we have inner friction, we burn a tremendous amount of energy. It is much like having our foot on the gas pedal of our car while also having our other foot firmly on the brake. We may eventually get somewhere doing that, but at the same time we're burning incredible amounts of energy. We become tired, stressed, and success doesn't come as easily. Not only do we burn our fuel of energy, but we are also burning up our will power along with it. Will power is in shorter supply in our lives and that robs us of our focus.
To better clarify our inner friction let's talk about desert. I love desert! Let's make it specific. Chocolate desert. M-m-m-m, that is even more yummy. On a scale between 1 - 10, 10 being the best, I would rate a chocolate desert, for me, as an emotional 10. I become emotionally involved with chocolate desert. Sad but true, on the physical brain side, chocolate desert is very low on the scale. It has potential to increase my fat cells. Bummer! On the logical brain side of things, because of the physical side lowest of low rating of the desert equation, the logical brain rates it a 3. Very sad face at this point.
Let's make this even more clear using the example of raw broccoli. I am not a big fan. When my kids were young they always called raw broccoli "trees". When eating a spear of this vegetable it does feel like the head of the spear is a tree in my mouth. Not so cool. My emotional brain is not excited about raw broccoli. It rates it a 1. My physical brain say, "but Nan, broccoli is so good for you. It promotes a health immune system and will help you lose weight." My physical brain gives it a 10. My logical brain says it is good for me, but I don't like it and gives it a 5. In both of these examples we have inner friction. In both scenarios my goal of eating better and losing weight is compromised by my inner friction.
Each one of us has different parts of our personality. These different personalities take over at different times in different circumstances. For instances, when you have that home alone, watching tv, with your not "dress for success" happy face boxer shorts on, drinking a beer kind of personality thing going on, that would not be the same personality you would want to show when you are giving a presentation to a client, or talking to a more straight laced smart person. Your client might not want to do business with your earthier side. The inner friction happens when the wrong personality is being used at the wrong time and we are hindering our road to success. What could be preventing you from becoming massively successful? It could even be a personality that is focused on unworthiness and lack, making its appearance at the wrong time.
Many times we take the path of least resistance. Eben talks about when the city of Boston started paving their roads. They paved their roads over all the cow paths. Those were the paths that everyone had already been using. When the Pioneers where crossing the country on their way west, they followed the paths that the Buffalo and other creatures had already made. Those were the paths of least resistance. Those paths were great for finding watering holes. The path would go around a group of boulders and a tree here and there. It would meander its way to the water hole. But, if you are going to create a 4 lane super highway it is not productive to just pave over those paths. If your goal is to create a super highway of success it needs to straight, clear of obstructions and fast! When we keep doing the same behaviors it is like following those paths of least resistance. Those behaviors become habitual patterns much like those paths. Those habitual thought patterns are damaging our chances being successful. What paths are you following? Are you paving over cow paths or are you paving a 4 lane super highway?
To achieve success we really need to be careful of our habitual patterns of thought. We will need to be responsible for developing those thought patterns that supports our growth and success. Everything we do is a process. Most of what we do is on auto pilot, much like the paths around the boulders and trees on its way to the water holes. Those can be very damaging if they are causing inner friction. To undo those patterns of thought we need to first become aware of them. Some of those thought patterns are firmly entrenched like the concrete over the cow paths in Boston. We will need to identify those thought patterns that are responsible for the largest amounts of inner friction. Some examples of this would be unworthiness and feelings of lack. Once you have identified them, ask yourself, "What is the payoffs and benefits of these thoughts and feelings?" Once we have uncovered the real reason it is time to develop new strategies.
Let's go back to the example of my yummy chocolate desert. By doing the above exercise I now know why I want that yummy desert and I know that it causes inner friction with my desire to lose weight and eat healthy. Instead of getting into a debate with myself about my chocolate slice of heaven causing my inner friction, I should accept myself and my desire for chocolate, and go to work on an action plan. I could start out by drinking a big glass of water. If I am still locked into my junk food desires, I can substitute a healthy power bar with carob for my previous craving. This takes away my inner friction. Sounds good to me!
Phew! All of this talk about desert has made me hungry. Now where did I put that power bar!
