Successful Anatomy & Physiology Revision

Those of you who would like to become holistic therapists

, beauty therapists, estheticians or undertake any other field in the holistic and beauty industry, you have to get a relevant qualification in anatomy and physiology first. It is a necessity for any course in this industry and needs to be carried out. With this course, you have to be aware of how the human body works, what systems it is made up of, how each of these systems work and how these systems work together to achieve balance in the body. The amount of work involved, coupled with the hard technical terms, makes this subject challenging to say the least.

Most examining bodies break the anatomy and physiology syllabus down into 12 systems of the body, such as skeletal, cell, digestive, muscular, reproductive, lymphatic, respiratory, circulatory, urinary, skin, nervous and endocrine. Occasionally there can be some confusion between body systems so it is important, when revising, to study each system separately. In order to cover all of these systems, you have to have a relevant revision guide that consists of a generous amount of study questions and puzzles. A structured revision plan is also essential as it ensures that you remain focused during your studies. Having a good revision guide and plan will ensure that you can fully prepare for your exams.

After several years of teaching anatomy and physiology, I have devised a study and revision plan that has been instrumental in the successes of students. I would advise you to follow my plan as it allows you to learn the body systems in the quickest and most effective way.

First of all, before you start any revision, you need to have a good written plan in place. Create your plan using 3 headings, the first one will be 'Area to be studied' or 'Subject Matter', the second heading will be the date that you are going to start studying this area and the third heading will be the date which you are due to finish that particular area of study. An ideal too to use for filling out your plan would be an excel spreadsheet. Having it typed up and printed off is more beneficial so make sure you do this, don't just leave it in a file on your computer where you won't be able to view it on a daily basis.

When you start revising an area, take a number, about 20 or 25, of multiple choice questions from your revision guide. The majority of examining bodies use multiple choice questions as the format for their exam questions so using the same format is always a good idea. With these type of questions, you get 4 possible solutions and you can only pick one answer . Take a piece of paper or a record card and write the questions out, put them in your bag and keep them with you. When you are on a break at work or during your commute home, take out the questions and study them. Always examine what you have learned at the end of the day. If you answer any questions incorrectly, add these to your new batch the next day and continue to learn them. If you continue with the process for only 5 days you will have studied and learned up to 125 questions. This is a large amount of work covered in just 5 days, it will give you the confidence you will need when you go in to sit your anatomy and physiology exams.

Repeat this method each week. I know it might sound simple but I cannot stress how effective it can be. Imagine after one month of studying from Monday to Friday each week, you will be able to answer 400 multiple choice questions!
