Ever since he directed the movie "300," Zack Snyder has been the favorite at Warner Bros. They allowed him to bring one of the most well known graphic novels ever to the big screen, 'Watchmen'. He was allowed a free reign over a kids' film about warrior owls from Australia which talked and he has been hailed as 'Superman's' savior. Now he has been given an idea and left to do what he wants with it.

The result is Sucker Punch', starring five of the most nubile young actresses in the business. This fantasy has great promise, but thanks to the shallow performances of the leads, this adventure falls flat on his face, and never gets up again. It is a film about a girls prison and the quest the five of them have to go through to escape, It would give away the ending but it will give you the chance to stay awake to see it yourself.

So, this is the part where some of the wittiest lines are quoted, except there are none. Forget about emotional highs and lows too, they don't exist either. As Snyder co wrote the script, this is both disappointing and very annoying. The idea is okay, the premise is good, the director is a golden boy, but Sucker Punch just doesn't deliver.

A young heiress played by Emily Browning is framed for her sister's murder and sent to Lennox House. A Polish psychotherapist takes her through a striptease/dance 'cure' which turns out to be a grooming to perform for paying customers. Not being best pleased she bands together with four other girls to escape vi an alternative reality. Baby doll, as she is known, is given her orders by a wise man, who tells her she must find 5 talismans in order to escape.

As she only has 5 days until her lobotomy, she enlists Amber (Jamie Chung), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Rocket (Jena Malone) to help. These fellow hooker/dancer/inmates join Baby doll in her complex quest. Baby doll just has to perform her bump 'n' grind for the customers for the girls to shoot off to another battle zone inside their imaginations.

Uma Thurman and 'Kill Bill' are clear inspirations for the characters but it really doesn't come off. Not one of these is remotely sexy, even when barely dressed. The characters are so two dimensional that even when they are in mortal danger you don't care a jot what happens to them. If you played video games in 2005, that gives you an idea of the digitally enhanced battle scenes.

The Polish doctor growls in a quite atrocious accent that if they don't dance, they have no purpose. As this is a key part of the film, it's strange we never actually see them dance. Sucker Punch is a good name for it as that's what everyone's purses and wallets will take to fork out to see this tosh. Snyder's next film is meant to be 'Superman, man of steel', that's if Warner Bros let him anywhere near it.
