The authors begin their research paper with the following statement, "In first world countries, sudden infant death (SID) is the most common cause of death during the first 12 months of postnatal life." Wow, put those 3 words together and you stir up a lot of emotion. Here's a study performed in hopes of identifying the cause of and a possible solution to sudden infant death.
So, you can imagine my joy after reading the conclusion: "Chiropractic therapy has proven to be a successful technique which can be used to treat disorders, especially cerebral disturbances of motor patterns of various etiology (wryneck, c-scoliosis, irritation of the plexus brachialis), sensomotoric disturbances of integration ability (retardation of sensation and coordination), as well as pain related entities such as cry-babies with 3-month colic' or hyperactivity with sleeplessness."
The above conclusion is quite a mouthful and very powerful! Think about it folks; do you still think chiropractic is for only neck and back pain?! WRONG!!! Seriously, did you read the above conclusion? Burn the image of a parents sorrow after their infant dies from SID. Now, burn the image of an infant receiving the chiropractic adjustment and their reduced risk of SID. That's powerful and that's exactly what this study burns into my brain!
Let's get into the nuts and bolts of this study. Here's what the authors identified poor posture results in neck mechanical irritation which may lead to SID. Here's what they stated exactly, "Infants between 1 and 12 months of age were given upper neck chiropractic adjustments if they were thought to be at risk of sudden infant syndrome, by noting asymmetries in the horizontal and sagittal plane of body posture and motion. Chiropractic treatment and manual therapy have become increasingly popular over the past decadeour findings are consistent with the possibility that a minor mechanical irritation of the cervical region may trigger the first step in the events that lead to SIDchildren with a disturbed symmetry of the atlanto-occipital region could be of higher risk for SID."
Here's what the authors recommended THE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT. Here's what they stated exactly, "Asymmetry in the atlanto-occipital-C2 region was determined by x-rays. For the chiropractic therapy the infants were positioned on their back while the chiropractor was sitting perpendicular to the child's head. Great care was taken that the infant was comfortable before the impulse [adjustment] was administered. The impulse [adjustment] was applied to the side of the asymmetry."
I love it! Science continues to prove what Doctors of Chiropractic have known since 1895. Amazing what the body can do when nerve system interference is eliminated!!! Get your spine checked. It's as simple as that!
