Suffering From Allergies? Then Give The Phenolic Acids A Try

The phenolic acids are a group of phytonutrients (plant based chemical compounds

with various health benefits) that can be sourced from a number of fruits and vegetables. Their health benefits include minimising allergic reactions, removing toxins from the body, protecting against disease and much more. In this article I will be providing a full overview of 2 phenolic acids and their main health benefits.

1) GALLIC ACID:

Gallic acid can be sourced from various fruits, nuts and teas. Walnuts are the best source and contain a notable 1,625 milligrams (mg) per 100 grams (g). Oranges are also a good gallic acid food with a 100g serving giving you 84mg of this phenolic acid. Gallnuts, grapes and tea also contain some gallic acid but the exact amounts they contain are not known.

In terms of health benefits, this phenolic acid is a powerful antihistamine (a substance that acts against histamine and reduces allergic reactions), anti-inflammatory (a substance that reduces unnecessary inflammation in the body) and antioxidant (a substance that protects your body's cells from dangerous free radicals). Additionally, it can prevent albuminuria (a health disorder where excess albumin protein is found in the urine), prevent neuronal disorders, prevent various types of cancer (a health disorder which leads to rapid, uncontrollable cellular growth) and prevent diabetes (a health disorder which leads to your blood glucose levels becoming extremely high).

2) TANNIC ACID:

Tannic acid can be found in a wide range of plant based foods with apricots, blackberries, cabbage, grapes, green tea, lemons, melons, oranges, peas, pineapples and wine all being very good sources of this phenolic acid.

Tannic acid has a number of important health benefits in humans. Studies have shown that this phenolic acid is a potent antibacterial (a substance that inhibits the growth of bacteria), antimutagenic (a substance that prevents genetic mutations), antioxidant, antitoxic (a substance that protects your body's cells from harmful toxins) and astringent (a substance that causes your body's tissues to contract and is mainly used on the skin cells to prevent bleeding).

In addition to these confirmed benefits, early evidence indicates that tannic acid may also have further roles in human health. For starters, it may be able to prevent Alzheimer's disease (a mental disorder which causes memory loss, loss of thought and speech problems), cancer and diabetes. This phenolic acid may also be able to treat skin conditions such as blisters and rashes. However, more research is required before these provisional health benefits can be confirmed.
