Sukhadia Circle - Capturing The Beauty And Charm Of Udaipur

In southern Rajasthan, India, lies Udaipur, the historic capital of the Mewar kingdom of the former Rajputana Agency

. Its white walls and green parks provide a contrasting background to the colourful culture of the Rajasthani people by day. By night its lights are mirrored on the five lakes that made it a welcome oasis in the dessert. Famous with traders and royalty in the past, tourists from around the world come to surrender to its charms and the romantic surroundings of the "Venice of the East" are hotspots for weddings and celebrations.

Sitting on the base of the Aravali mountain range, Udaipur was ideal for a capital that needed to be protected from invading armies. According to legend the first of its many forts and palaces were built with blessings from a hermit, around 1559 A.D. One can almost find a palace at every turn in this city that hosts the world's oldest royal dynasty. The City Palace is a complex of palaces and courtyards stretching along the eastern bank of Lake Pichola, with balconies overlooking the island palaces, Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir.

To get away from the heat of the Rajasthani summer, the Mewar royalty would escape into their palaces in the mountains. On the road to the cool climates and hill resorts of Mount Abu in the heart of Pachwati, is the popular public square of Sukhadia Circle. Named after the Rajasthan's former Chief Minister, who was a citizen of Udaipur, the roundabout park opened to the public in 1970.

At the centre of its pond is a 21 metre fountain, with three ornately decorated marble tiers topped with a wheatear motif symbolizing prosperity. Visitors can enjoy its glamour while on a paddle duck-boat on the pond or from the elegant gardens that encircle it. Children are especially drawn to Sukhadia Circle and many can be seen floating toy boats on the pond or riding the mini train around the grounds. The garden is best enjoyed in the evenings, with cool temperatures and the brilliantly illuminated fountain highlighting its quaint charm.

Sukhadia Circle can be visited from any conveniently located Udaipur hotel. But whilst in the Princely State, why not indulge in a luxury hotel Udaipur has to offer? Palaces once open only for royalty now welcome in guests who wish to live the lavish lives of the Rajasthani kings. The Leela Palace Udaipur on Lake Pichola treats guest to a splendid view of the lake and mountains while they enjoy its opulence and grandeur.
