Summer Skiing

Although the main skiing season lasts from late autumn to early May

, it is still possible to ski even at the height of summer. While the options for August are limited, this can be more than made up for in the Port du Soleil area by other activities. Catered chalets, which are mainly used for skiing holidays, can make an excellent base any time of year, and the area offers many alternatives.

Take Les Gets and its surroundings for example. This charming alpine village is the centre of a mountain biker's paradise, offering over 500 miles of trails to explore. And if you just enjoy natural beauty, you can safely wander through well-marked hikes and footpaths. Many lifts are open all year round. A catered chalet, such as those offered by The Chalet Experience (in the process of changing over to Mountain and Tradition) would be a welcome retreat after fun and exercise in such breathtaking surroundings.

However, being out in the open at high altitudes in the height of summer exposes you to radiation of an intensity that you have probably never experienced anywhere else. The natural atmospheric absorption is greatly reduced compared to lower altitudes, such as the seaside, and extreme precaution must be taken. Use complete sun block to begin with, and then after a few days you may be able to reduce the protection, at your own peril.

Abseiling, rafting, trekking with donkeys, potholing and micro lighting are some of the other things you could combine with the limited skiing. The summer sun warms the lakes to an average temperature of 22 degrees which makes swimming surrounded by the magnificent backdrop of forests, green pastures and icy peaks particularly pleasurable. If you enjoy skiing, and would like it to be part of an active summer break, a catered chalet in the area could be just the answer.
