Summer Time, Summer Time, Sum-sum Summer Time

That tune is joyously playing in my head because it's finally here! Summer time! It's time to kick off your shoes and find those flip flops

. Pack away all the sweaters and pull on a T-shirt and get ready to enjoy the great outdoors. From a day at the beach to a day's drive to some new adventure, a quick weekend getaway or a two week vacation, summer time is the time that we're on the move. The problem arises when we're not prepared with how to stay true to our chosen lifestyle. We want to be able to be spontaneous enough to grab our bags and go! So that you won't be left out of all the fun, I've got some fantastic tips for keeping you healthy, organized and spontaneous.

Purchase a soft-sided travel cooler - one that is small enough to use as a carry on when traveling by air, yet large enough to pack some necessities in. Does this seem like a tall order? It really isn't and, better yet, they're very affordable! Price range from $30 to $50. Try MaxCold by Igloo or Polar Bear coolers - there's a ton of options available.

Always travel with your own napkins, silverware and bowls. I even travel with a sarong to use as a table cloth. It will just make you feel better to have a few niceties with you. It's the little things that give us great pleasure, so put these items aside along with any others you may want and pack them and leave them in your travel cooler.

Create a "Restaurant Bag." What's a restaurant bag you ask? Well, it's a small bag (about the size of a makeup bag or pencil bag, for you boys out there) that you keep all of your dining condiments in. This would include such things as nutritional yeast, spirulina, Himalayan salt, flax oil, enzymes and dulse flakes or anything else you think you might need to be comfortable when dining out. Just put your thinking cap on and imagine you're out to dinner with a few friends who eat the Standard American Diet (SAD) - what would YOU need to make your dining experience more tasty? Now pack it.

I actually have two restaurant bags. One is left in my traveling cooler and the other is left in my car bag or my 'to go' bag. I keep two restaurant bags so I don't have to think about what I need to pack - it's already done and I won't forget to switch things from one bag to another. Everything is set in place for easy travel. My car bag or my 'to go' bag is something I always have with me when I'm planning on being out for a few hours. Just like you take your keys, purse or wallet, and cell phone with you - these are your necessities. Now think about what you will need on those long errand days when you're nowhere near home and you're starving! One too many times my few hours turned into four or more and my hunger pains taught me a few things. Never leave home unprepared. Now if those hunger pains hit I'm thrilled to have some much needed food with me.

Create a 'to go' bag of your own. You can simply designate a bag that you have now as your car bag and leave it by your other car travel items. My 'to go' bag is on a hook under my purse in the front hallway. So when I grab my purse to leave I can easily take my 'to go' bag with. When I return home, both get put back on the hook to await our next adventure.

Pack some dehydrated snacks - staples like crackers, chips, wraps, nuts and dehydrated fruit. These are always in my bag. Most of these snacks will last a few months in air-tight containers. So pack some up for yourself, you'll be glad you took the time to do this.

Pack a sharp knife with a blade cover. (You may also want to pack a thin plastic cutting board - the kind that rolls up and takes up virtually no space.) This way you'll always be able to cut an avocado or other fruits and vegetables whenever and wherever you desire. This of course is will only work for car travel. For air travel you'll have to remove the knife from your carry on.

When you're making airline reservations, don't forget to check the dietary requirements section. Many airlines offer vegan meals and fruit plates. Plan ahead!

When booking hotel reservations, be sure to ask for a room with a refrigerator. I have found that many hotels are quite willing to accommodate this request.

When traveling in an unfamiliar town, during the planning stage do an internet search for natural grocery stores or coops that have salad and juice bars. I book my hotel reservations in close proximity to a natural grocer. That way I can have a great breakfast juice and a wonderful salad for dinner each night of my stay. I can always make lunch out of my cooler or 'to go' bag!

Always try to pack high-calorie fruits for long errand days. I always pack a few avocados - just in case. Many times I've pulled out my knife, avocado, papaya wrap (always in my 'to go' bag), and Himalayan salt and have made myself a wonderful meal. Mmmmm good!

If you're going on a longer trip, pack a sprout bag and your favorite seeds. Simply hang the bag in the shower or near a window and - voila! - you've got beautiful sprouts. (A great Travel Cooler item!)

Pack a 16 to 24 ounce mug/container/jar for your morning smoothies/juice and make yourself a wonderfully refreshing breakfast. I also always take along an AeroLatte Frother - it's a wonderful device for making blended drinks! (A great Travel Cooler item!)

After awhile, you'll be a well-seasoned raw food traveler and will have created some wonderful tips of your own! Hopefully this list will get you on your way to healthy, spontaneous summertime fun!
