Summer Vacation - How To Keep Your Children Busy Without Breaking The Bank

Summer is in full swing and the kids are getting bored at times

. After their initial rest and relaxation time, then boredom and the lack of structured activities sets in. This is about the time most parents start to think "I love them, but I will be glad when school starts back." Well, it does not have to be that way.

Most families are on a tight budget to start with and with the ever-weakening economy it is even truer. But what events and activities can you do with your kids that will not cost an arm and leg? As a matter of fact, the economy is so bad most families are not even taking a vacation but are opting to stay at home. Even if this is you, your family does not have to sit in the house looking at each other wishing they were all somewhere else.

It is time to get back to basics and participate in activities that are inexpensive and fun to do as a family. These simple life pleasures can bring a family back together and out of the rat race of life.

- Set rules.

First, set rules as to how much time the kids have to spend doing chores around the house. Do not make them feel as though they have become slave labor working them from dawn to dusk around the house. They may start to wish they had agreed to be sent to summer camp instead. You do want to set an example and teach your children to be responsible with tasks they should do each day such as helping with the laundry, preparing meals, taking out the trash and mowing the lawn, but leave plenty of fun time as well.

- Low cost activities.

Start to make a list of low cost or free activities your children and family can participate in. Get the kids involved by allowing each of them to come up with an idea of a fun low cost activity he/she wants to do. Make a plan to do one of the activities each day saving the more expensive ones for last. These could include such activities as going to the park, swimming at a lake or state park or going to a playground with the grand finale being a trip to the big water park.

- Daycations.

Encourage your children to think of activities they can do that are local or require little travel...somewhere that would be fun to go and spend the whole day like a local lake or state park. Most of these are free or only cost a few dollars for the day. Some include fishing, canoeing and swimming, which can be fun for the whole family. There may be camps that are run by schools or churches that can be very inexpensive that include arts and crafts, sports and other fun activities.

These are just a few ideas of fun activities for your children to stay busy and out of trouble for their summer vacation.
