Bowl season is upon us

Bowl season is upon us. College football fans look forward to the bowl season every year as a time when months and months of rooting for our favorite teams can lead to a thrilling victory in one of college football's greatest traditions: the bowl game. This year's Sun Bowl is slated to take place in El Paso, Texas at Sun Bowl Stadium on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 2009. The participants are not set quite yet, as there are still a few games yet to be played. But that won't stop college football experts from taking a guess as to who will come out on top. And even though the game is over a month away, football fans ought to still be scouring websites for the best Sun Bowl tickets around. Let's take a look at some of the teams you might see in the Sun Bowl.

USC - The Sun Bowl has tie-ins with the Pac-10, Big East and Big 12, so you're most likely going to see a team or two from these conferences. This year USC looks like a good bet to get to the game. Since the Pac-10 should send its best team to the Rose Bowl, and a few other bowls will get other Pac-10 teams, we're thinking that the Trojans, who will probably finish third in the Pac-10, make a good pick for the Sun Bowl. USC is currently, as of Nov. 22, 2009, ranked No. 20 in the latest BCS Rankings and No. 24 in the latest AP Poll Rankings. Southern California hasn't been seen in the Sun Bowl since 1998, when they lost to TCU.

Stanford - Currently Stanford is 7-4, and although they were on a nice hot streak coming into their matchup with Cal (the Big Game), they took a 28-34 beating to their biggest rivals and fell drastically in the polls. Stanford was booted from the AP Poll, but they might be able to crawl back onto the board if they can take down Notre Dame at home in convincing fashion. Win against the Fighting Irish, and the Cardinals might earn themselves a selection in the Sun Bowl.

Oklahoma - Right now the Oklahoma Sooners look posed to take a trip out to El Paso this New Year's Eve. We're looking for Big 12 teams that are good, but not good enough to win the conference. We see the Sooners winning against Oklahoma State, another good Big 12 team and their main rivals, in the season finale, boosting the Oklahoma record to 7-5 and improving their poll position greatly. If the Sooners had not lost badly on the road to Texas Tech, they might have been more of a sure thing to get into a high quality bowl.

Other Teams - Cal and Oregon State both will finish with nice records in the Pac-10 and, probably, a decent poll ranking. It's all up to the decision makers within the Sun Bowl. The Big East has possible selections in Pittsburgh, West Virginia, South Florida and Rutgers. The Big 12 could send Nebraska.
