Sun Cream By Myreviewsnow

How It Works

How It Works

Each type of sun cream works by absorbing or reflecting the potentially harmful rays of the sun. Because the creams are diffusing the UV rays, the skin is less likely to be sunburned. Each type of sun cream comes with a numeric label, such as 15, 35, or 50, on its packaging to indicate the effectiveness of the Sun Protective Factor, or SPF. The higher the number, the more effective the sunscreen will be against the rays that cause sunburn.

Though many people believe the SPF indicates the amount of time a person is safely able to spend in the sun without getting sunburned, this is not necessarily the case. Other factors, such as the intensity of the sun's rays, how much and how often sun cream is applied, and a person's skin type are all important variables. Even the activity engaged in can affect the effectiveness of sun creams. Swimming, for example, can reduce the protection offered by the sun cream.

What Kinds of Sun Creams are Available

The most common type of sun cream comes in the form of a lotion. Lotions are easy to apply over exposed skin, and are particularly simple for delicate areas, such as around the eyes. Sprays are also available, and make quick work of applying sunscreen to the body.

Sun tan oils are another type of sun cream. These come in an oil form and are applied the same way traditional creams are, and offer the same protection. However, there is one vital difference between sun tan oil and sunscreens: sun tan oils are intended to let the skin become tanned, while still protecting it from burning.

Organic or all natural versions of sun creams are also readily available for the health concerned consumer. These all natural alternatives still offer protection from harmful UV rays without exposing the skin to all the different chemicals and ingredients contained in sun creams. Depending on the ingredients used, these all natural sun creams may not be as effective as traditional sun creams. However, they are still able to protect a person from the sun's harmful rays and keep the skin from becoming sunburned. Certain precautions may need to be taken, such as regularly reapplying the sunscreen as needed.

Sun cream can be found in many stores, including supermarkets, drug stores, and mass merchandise retailers. Even many cosmetics, like moisturizers for the face, hands, or lips, contain some amount of protection from the sun, often up to SPF 35.

Why Use Sun Creams?

Prevention of sunburn is the most obvious reason for using sun creams. However, there is a much more serious reason to protect the skin: Skin cancer. UV rays can cause Basal-cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer, as well as Squamous cell carcinoma. Ultraviolet A, or UVA, can cause an increase in melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society highly recommends the use of sun creams to help prevent cancer.

Though they come in many shapes, sizes, and consistencies, sun cream helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is readily available, and should be used whenever a person plans to spend time in the sun to prevent sunburns.
