Sun Yat Sens Residence - A Tribute To The Founder Of Modern China

Sun Yat-Sen, has gone down in history as the originator of the Republic of China

. Whilst instigating and encouraging the democratic revolution in China, Sun Yat-Sen was a large contributor to the modern history of China.

He together with his wife Madam Soong Ching-Ling lived in a modest European style two-storey home situated on the Xiangshan Road in Shanghai. This house was handed over from a Canadian Chinese who firmly believed in Sun Yat-Sens vision.

It was in this house that Sun Yat-Sen formulated much of his literature and beliefs. Better known as Sun Wen, Sun Yat-Sen put together a series of doctrines which are much revered even today. He also had extensive plans for the development of China. All this was balanced along the Principles of the People namely, Democracy, Nationalism, and Peoples Livelihood. Apart from this Sun Wen also had certain policies-Cooperation with Communists, Alliance with Soviet Russia, and assistance to peasant and workers movements.

All these great works of Sun Wen took place in his residence in Shanghai. At these premises he also received various party members and orchestrated the cooperation between the Communist and National Parties in China.

He lived at this residence together with his wife from 1919 up until his death in 1925. His wife continued to reside there until 8 years following the victory of China over the Japanese occupation, when she offered the residence as a memorial to her husbands life and work. Sun Yat-Sens residence was declared a cultural relic unit preserved by the state in 1961 and was opened to the public in 1988.

The residence is in exactly the same state as it was during its prominent owners lifetime. It contains more than 2700 literature volumes, photographs and other memorabilia central to the modern history of China.
