Sunglasses: Fun, Fashion And Frippery

In 1997, the Men in Black roared into the theaters to an audience hungry for a fight

with aliens alongside handsome Will Smith and cantankerous Tommy Lee Jones. These men donned black suits, black shoes, white button down shirts, black ties and a smooth and sexy pair of Ray Ban sunglasses.

The MIBs were a special group of men and women who protected and monitored the aliens living and assimilating on the planet earth. Once recruited, the MIBs lost all contact with the outside human world, no longer having an identity or name longer than a single letter. The MIBs wore black suits and Ray Ban sunglasses in order to blend in with the populace so that their clandestine pursuits went unnoticed.

Will Smith is certainly a handsome man, but many say that he looked especially good once those Ray Bans were in place and that swagger came out to play. Sunglasses dont always look good on people, in fact some people look downright silly with a pair of oversized sunglasses on their face, but there are those, like Will Smith, that makes the people go, then run out and buy their own pair of sunglasses.

Sunglasses were first invented as a form of eyewear meant to protect the eyes from the glare of the sun. Now, sunglasses serve the purpose of hiding the eyes, making a fashion statement, and are often used in outdoor sports to allow the sportsmen to see (this is especially true in winter sports where the glare of the sun on the snow can actually sear the retinas).

Movie stars love to use sunglasses as a form of disguise so that they can enjoy time outside running errands without being hounded by paparazzi. Unfortunately, paparazzi have a sixth sense about people wearing sunglasses at night Sunglasses are popular symbols in the right hands. Such as the example above; Ray Ban sunglasses were made popular by Men in Black, the theme song for the movie and the many movie posters that showed Will Smith wearing them. Sunglasses were also a big part of the Matrix movies. No one can imagine Neo or Trinity without envisioning them wearing those black sunglasses.

Sunglasses have become a form or expression that goes beyond the normal eyewear. Sunglasses can be tiny circles, oversized, can have added flair on the frames (see Elton John or Lady GaGa), can be adorned with diamonds or gilded, or both. Sunglasses arent just for keeping out the sun; they are also for grabbing attention.
