Clearwater, Florida resident Chuck Rosenthal does oil paintings of people that just glow with Florida sunlight

. If you had one of his paintings in your home in the winter up north, you would feel the room was warmer, just because of the painting. The warm colors, oranges, reds and yellows, remind one of hot summer days, as if the light streams out of the paintings.

There is a painting of a little girl sprinting from the water on the beach at sunset. It's called "Playing on the Beach." Dark reds and oranges make her skin glow, and remind you that even though it's sunset, it's still hot on that beach. What fun!

In another painting a youthful fellow searches in his beach bag for something. From the title "Now Where's My Mars Bar?", you can guess what it is he's looking for. Although the shadows in this painting are also long, as in the last one, the color of the light is more like early morning than evening. So perhaps the young man went to the beach early to beat the crowd and has already had his swim.

Another evening painting is "Watching the Surf" in which a woman and a little girl stand barefoot in swimsuits just about to enter the water. The light in this painting is warm oranges and reds, so finely painted that you get the idea you could touch their skin and feel the warmth of the absorbed sunlight.

A different evening painting, again with long shadows and darker shades of orange and red is "On the Gulf." It depicts a mother or a grandmother with a young girl who carries a beach pail. The woman is squatting and leaning towards the girl, perhaps persuading her that it is time to go home.

In this reviewer's opinion the best is "Clearwater Construction Workers." Five men stand in hardhats and orange vests in the hot summer sun of midday. You understand that from the painting because of the dark short shadows, and harsh lights that bleach the men's yellow hardhats nearly white. You can feel the heat from the white sidewalk.

If you've ever been to Clearwater in the summer, you have seen these men and perhaps understand why they are standing there - maybe they are trying to sort out something about the job, but Clearwater in the summer is just too hot to do much physical labor for long.

This artist loves sunlight. And he can translate it onto canvas beautifully. These paintings each tell a story - actually more than one. We don't know the artist's version of the story - but each observer has his own story to go with the painting. And that is how art should be.
