Suntech establishes 1st U.S. Manufacturing Plant In Arizona
The New York Stock Exchange-listed company said that it chose Arizona because its progressive renewable energy policies, which include a Renewable Energy Standard, and its proximity to the Arizona State University where its solar research initiatives are located. Suntech Power Holdings adds that Arizona is preferable because of the availability of local facilities that are ready for manufacturing, and its favourable weather as well.
Suntech first announced the opening of the new plant during the United States-China Green Tech Summit last November.
According to Suntech chief strategy officer Steven Chan, the plant was built to promote expansion of the solar firm into the United States solar market. Chan adds the plant's location will allow the company's American customers to save on the time, costs and greenhouse gas emissions associated with overseas shipping of solar panels.
The manufacturing plant will be built in Goodyear, Arizona and will have a production capacity of 30 megawatts, which can later be expanded to 120 megawatts depending on solar energy needs.
The manufacturing plant will be using the firm's advanced solar electricity manufacturing technologies and testing facility. A solar park will also be set up so that power may be produced and used in the solar plant.
Suntech Power Holdings reveals that production for the photovoltaic modules will begin by September this year.
Suntech, which designs, develops, manufactures, and markets solar products that cater to electric applications for residential, commercial, and industrial and public utility sectors, is the first renewable energy company based in China to be bringing manufacturing employment opportunities to the United States. It will hire more than 70 locals for its operations.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said that Arizona boasts of a strategic location for renewable energy, with its highly skilled workforce, incentive program, and low payroll taxes.
With regional headquarters in China, Switzerland, and California, Suntech Power Holdings offers solar modules that are operated and maintained by its massive in-house technology team and 700 quality control professionals. Suntech modules have also received certifications and numerous approvals from agencies such as UL, CE, TUV and IEC.
Suntech'spatent-pending Pluto technology for crystalline silicon solar cells improves power output by up to 12% compared to conventional production methods. Suntechalso offers one of the broadest ranges of building-integrated solar products under the MSK Solar Design Line(TM).
Suntech sells around 1,000,000 Standard Modules worldwide.
