I stopped writing articles related to Astronomy after realizing that my career is just Civil engineering and not Astrophysics. But when the televisions are blaming the Moon for everything that's happening in Japan(Earthquake on March 11th), I am deeply saddened and moved to prove that it is not the Moon, which is causing all the disasters and I will try my level best !!
Super moon is the full Moon, at its perigee to the Earth's orbit. 1 minute.!!Let me tell you what a Perigee means....The Moon orbits round the Earth in an elliptical orbit rather than in a circular one, with Earth as one of the focus. So at one point of the orbit(356 410 km) , it would be very closer to Earth and that is called as Perigee and the point where it would be very farther(406 697 km), is called as Apogee.
So now let's get back to the actual discussion. Moon takes 27.3 days on an average to complete its orbit around the Earth. The Super moon is dated to be on March 19th. That means the Moon comes to its Perigee on March 19th. That implies that the Moon is very far away from the Perigee on March 11th(400000 km i.e.farther than the average distance) . Then why the heck are the News channels shouting that the Japan earthquake is just the result of the Super Moon??
Even the same ridiculous thing happened after the 2004 December 24th Tsunami. The Super Moon is dated to appear on Jan 10, 2005 and as per calculations, on December 24th, it was exactly at its Apogee. Then how could the Earthquake happen because of the Moon??
Fine....So Ive discussed the two major events that occurred in the past. Now let's go to the thing what is claimed to happen on this Super Moon(March 19th 2011). On this day, the Moon, the sun and the Earth are in a straight line with the Moon at it's Perigee. So obviously there would be an effect on the tides on this day. But still the Tidal forces are the WEAKEST and they remain very weak even on this day. Even if this Super Moon is going to cause very high tides, they are no going to cause any recordable events like Earthquakes or Tsunamis on this day.
what I wanna impress upon all the readers is please believe Astronomers, Geologists, Scientists, Seismologists. Please listen to what they are trying to explain you. This is not the 'Hollywood 2012 film' to hide facts from you but this is life. Don't waste your time listening to the Astrologers or 3rd grade knowledge people at least at this stage of time.
Well, I even agree that news channels started all this non sense after it is being claimed by a so called well known Astrologer. But let me tell you one thing, Astronomy is some thing which has reasons for every thing that happens and Astronomers, Geologists, Seismologists are the people who intimate you everything before it happens. But whereas the Astrology is some thing which has no reasons for what it tells and Astrologers are the people who always tries to mesmerize people with their ridiculous predictions. So whom should the Press listen to? Is it to the Astronomers or Astrologers? Listen to the scientists, start believing it, give scrolls on it, prepare your documentation with hi-tech sound systems and intimate people, hitting the bench that there would be no harm due to this Super Moon. Even then you can make news !! I don't mean any dis respect to those who believe in Astrology but keep it with yourselves and do not try to impress them upon the other innocent people as they are just innocent!!
So what I wanna conclude this article with is 2 things. The first one is the super Moon can cause normal expected high tides as every full Moon and thus I advice people near the shores to take basic precautions. And the second thing is don't hide yourselves due to the silly fear but just come out of your homes during the night time on March 19th. You can see the wonderful Moon, which is 14% bigger than the original one and the brightness of the sky caused by it. Don't afford to miss this stunning spectacular view as you can't see the Super Moon again till November 14, 2016 !!
