This is my first arcade stick.
It's a lot more comfortable to use than the ps3 pad.
Though I am still getting used to the handling of it, so my inputs aren't as sharp as they were with the ps3 pad at the moment.
I am using Ryu and was told that since it comes with a square gate enclosing the the joystick, it's harder to pull out moves like hadoken which require quarter circle inputs. This square gate is better for charge characters like Guile.
I may switch the gate to an octagonal gate but I would like to try it out first.
So this stick being my first, I can't really comment on quality, but I like it much better than a pad. My thumbs are really grateful.

Amazing stick...design flaw? I don't think so
If you are looking at this you probably have read a good amount about this stick (or it's many derivatives) so I'll keep it short. Amazing, arcade quality build on the stick. Good weight and size. The plexi glass top doesn't give me any discomfort on my wrists. I play with it on my lap and I have yet to even feel the so-called "sharp" edge of the plexi glass. Sure, you can feel it is a bit rough but nothing to write home about or even bothersome in my opinion. Overall great stick and no more struggling with the d pad!

Amazing Arcade Stick with a ridiculous design flaw
This is my first professional grade Arcade Stick. I currently own the poorly made Tekken 5 Arcade stick as well as the Xbox360 wireless Tekken 6 stick. They are very good for beginners, but until I owned this particular device, I never knew what I was missing. The buttons are perfect, never sticky, and are extremely sensitive to the touch which allows for much better execution. The stick is very fluid, and, while it took alot of practice to be able to perform moves, once you get the hang of it, you will never want to go back to standard controllers for fighting games.
With that said, the most mind boggling thing about this product is the sharp edge. Who thought that this would be a good idea? I am not a wimp by any means, but after a few hours of playing, you can definitely feel the edge rubbing against your wrist. The best way to remedy this is to have perfect posture and make sure you're sitting above the stick with your wrists raised off of the device, however, Mad Catz should have thought this one through more.
Because of this one design flaw, I cannot give it a full five stars. However, I still recommend this product, as it will lift your game to new heights with the proper practice.
Fundamentally Flawed - Square Gate Issues
I just don't understand these reviews. This stick has a square gate, making fluid fireballs, dragon punches IMPOSSIBLE to pull off. I understand that Street Fighter 4 makes good use of a square gate (and thus has changed the way the dragon punch is input to accommodate this) - but it's still flawed. Pulling off anything with circular motion is counter-intuitive. The corners of the gate prevent any fluid motion whatsoever. It literally feels like you're battling the controller and not your opponent.
Yes, you can change the gate. Guess what? There are only octagonal gates available. No fully smooth circular gates for this Sanwa stick.
The product itself is well made. Turbo works great. The buttons feel very high quality. The stick feels high quality, too, with a nice smooth motion.
Unfortunately, since the design of it is fundamentally flawed, I cannot give this a good rating.

Update:
After having used the stick for 2 weeks with Super Street Fighter 4 (with the stock square gate), I have found that I am getting used to the different gate. With a few exceptions, moves have gotten easier to execute, but nowhere near the ease of a fluid circular gate.
I find that fireballs are especially difficult to pull off. They require you to almost completely ignore the sides of the joystick, so your stick never touches the sides. It's especially difficult with combos that requiring a standing punch/kick (and not crouching punch/kick), as it requires you to do the fireball motion quickly after doing the initial move. With a circular gate, you can start doing the fireball move as you press the punch/kick. Yet another instance where players are forced to relearn how to do simple time-tested combos.
On a related note, my previous review was based on Street Fighter 4. After using the stick with Super Street Fighter 4 it feels like Capcom has made it easier to execute moves overall (confirmed after some light research). Of course, that positively affects this sticks performance.
Therefore, I have increased my initial product rating. However, what still prevents me from a glowing rating is:
- Both Madcatz and Capcom have hidden the square gate detail from the product description.
- Madcatz have purposely made it difficult to customize the stick in terms of violating your warranty.
- This stick does not work right for previous versions of Street Fighter such as Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, and Alpha 1 and 2 (both available on PSN). These games weren't designed for square gates. Pressing forward then fireball motion is very difficult with the square gate.
