Supplementing Super Oxide Dismutase Through Jiaogulan
While they are simply proteins acting as catalysts for triggering natural chemical reactions
, every enzyme produced by our body has a particular function. Among the various body enzymes, super oxide dismutase or SOD is very important in destroying free radicals in the body.
Super oxide dismutase is believed to give better protection from free radicals than other popular antioxidants. However, is SOD something that you must add to your diet? The FDA does not distinguish SOD as a necessary supplement but by knowing its benefits for your health, you can decide if this supplement is best for you.
The Role of Super Oxide Dismutase
SOD plays a crucial role in the antioxidant system of the body, disrupting the initial conversion by dismuting the most reactive oxygen form the superoxide free radicals into a less reactive form. This process is called dismutation, hence its name dismutase, which means an enzyme that blocks mutation. When these transformation processes do not quickly eliminate the free radicals, the cells suffer from oxidative stress, leading to health problems.
Supplying the Body with SOD
Super oxide dismutase can be added to your daily diet by consuming dark green plants, barley grass, sprouts, cabbage and broccoli. The only problem with increasing SOD through diet is that it is still vague if SOD survives digestion and gets absorbed. That is where SOD supplemental forms come in. The ones worth buying are those coated as they can survive gastric digestion and reach the small intestine, where it will be absorbed into the bloodstream.
SOD extracted from microbial and plant sources are the best choices as the enzyme derived from animals is less likely to be effective. Catalase is another type of antioxidant that has the same function as SOD in neutralizing oxidants. An antioxidant supplement containing both is most likely to be more effective.
Certain types of herbs can increase the production of SOD in the body. This class of herbs known as adaptogens contains special compounds that can activate the production of SOD, and thereby, detecting and removing free radicals out from the body. One of the most promising adaptogens today is jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum), believed to contain an active ingredient that can influence SOD activity.
Super oxide Dismutase and Jiaogulan
In a study concerning the effect of jiaogulan on SOD and MDA activity on mice suffering from fluorosis, scientists found out that the outcome of the effect of free radicals were lessened and that SOD levels were increased. SOD is an important antioxidant that the body generates by itself. The result revealed that Jiaogulan could be an excellent source of antioxidant, as through it, the body gets encouraged to produce its own antioxidants. Such mechanism is much more effective than consuming or taking synthetic antioxidants.
As we age, our body is less capable of producing super oxide dismutase at the rate when we are still younger. Herbal experts believed that the bodys ability to generate SOD enzyme dramatically declines after the age of 40. Maybe that is the perfect time when you need to consider SOD, its benefits, functions and identify what form of supplement is best for you.
