A Growing Concern

There is no question that children need vitamins to grow and thrive. There has, however, been some debate through the years over whether or not children should take vitamin supplements.


Ideally, children should get the vitamins they need from the food they eat, but most of them don't, either because they are picky eaters or because they are constantly exposed to the fast food mania that is so prevalent in our country.

Insufficient amounts of Vitamin B can lead to nervous system malfunctions and children who don't get enough vitamin C are prone to immune system deficiencies that make them vulnerable to diseases.

Vitamin D supports healthy bone growth and children who don't get enough are at risk for bone disorders, including rickets.

Many children don't get enough vitamin D because they spend too little time outside or they are not drinking enough milk. Lactose intolerant children are particularly prone to vitamin D deficiencies.

A Supplemental Choice

If you decide to give your child the extra boost that supplements can provide, make sure that the ones you buy are formulated especially for children.

A good supplement will provide nearly 100 percent of the recommended daily allowances of vitamins and minerals. It is important to follow the dosage instructions on the label.

Keep supplements tightly closed and on a high shelf so that little hands can't reach them and make sure your children understand that vitamins are not candy.

Children's supplements come in several forms including chewable tablets, capsules and liquids. Do not use supplements that contain artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners.


Most natural health food stores have children's supplements that do not contain harmful additives.

It's never too soon to help your child develop healthy habits. Proper development of the body and mind provides the foundation for a healthy, happy adulthood.
