For anyone who doesnt already know, ethical screening is a process that provides

support for businesses, cooperatives, organisations, and individuals who invest money. The motive behind this is to ensure that the money which is invested is supporting a good cause and ethical activities. Someone who chooses to invest ethically will be aware of all the principle concerns surrounding human rights, animal welfare and the environment.

Similarly ethical trading refers to a business transaction where the buyer has concerns for the working conditions of all the people that are involved in the production of their product. There are a growing number of organisations that are now concerned with the source of their produce, these organisations a working together to gradually eliminate slave labour, chid labour, physical and mental abuse, and any other inhumane activities.

Despite that fact that the slavery was supposedly abolished way back in the 19th century, there still seems to be much in the way of slave labour and child labour in third world countries. In fact it is known that forced slave labour is still relatively common practise in some parts of the food industry, and the UK is no exception to this. Could it be that slavery has just been moved behind the scenes where no one has to feel any burden of guilt? Though no one actual owns slaves anymore this is not to say that they are not benefitting from the prices that slave labour can provide.

As mentioned there has been reports from migrant workers of forced labour in the UK. It is believed that organised crime syndicates pay the fees that are necessary to get a migrant across to work in the UK. As a result many migrant workers are indebted to the gang members who then force them to carry out unreasonable tasks and work in inhumane conditions. In addition to long hours and cramped working conditions there have also been cases of physical and mental abuse too. The workers are left choose between complying and being thrown out onto the streets, and as many of them are given accommodation with their work they have a substandard of living.

Unfortunately the people who find themselves in these situations will often never get out of them, as their wages are so low especially in comparison to what they have to pay back. Furthermore, it is quite disconcerting to think that many of them have fled their own country because of poor conditions, which may well have been even worse.
