Support Services Will Still Be Needed As 21st Century Economies Undergo Structural Change
UK statistics have revealed a slight decline in the numbers of people out of work
in the three months to May 2012, providing a small ray of hope for those struggling to find a position or looking to change careers.
When looked at more closely, however, there are some less positive trends. These include the possibility that the reduction has been in part created by the preparations for the 2012 Olympics and are therefore relatively short term.
The REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) also maps longer term employment trends and has been showing for some time that employer confidence has been weakening.
It has been said that the profile of industries in mature economies such as the UK is going through a structural change for the 21st Century and that there is little likelihood of a revival of the sectors that were predominant in the 20th Century. They include most industries that manufacture things, from clothing to cars, all of which can now be produced much more economically in places like China.
Although the idea of the job for life is long gone, this means that anyone at the start of a career or planning a career change needs to consider which sectors are likely to have a longer term future.
The print media is a good example of a declining industry. Although many graduates continue to be attracted to a career in journalism or publishing, as technological innovation continues and online media take over there are fewer opportunities available.
Those sectors that are increasing in importance in the 21st Century are predominantly in new technologies, in consultancies, such as HR, business development, or IT support, and in the service and support sectors, such as administration, book keeping or call minding.
While the nature of delivery of these services may change in that they may be bought in as required or contracted for specific periods so that companies can keep their overheads as low as possible both in terms of office space and in direct staff costs, they are all services that are central to keeping a company working smoothly.
It is likely that some of the more senior PA roles are still likely to remain in-house, particularly those who are working at director level.
This is particularly encouraging for people with administrative, secretarial and PA skills who are likely to continue to be in demand as 21st Century economies continue to evolve.
It is also encouraging for those specialist recruitment agencies that have built up an excellent reputation for sourcing skilled, trained, competent and reliable candidates and are likely to continue to be called on by employers to supply them.
