Suppressing The Internet
Too much of something good is bad they say
Too much of something good is bad they say. It has been used so much that it has become clich. I have been wondering though, when it comes to information, is there such a thing as having too much of it?
I think we can all agree that it would simply be very difficult going through life without knowing anything. Without information, where would we be? We base our actions on the information we get. We avoid the wrong and do what is right. We weigh the benefits and disadvantages before making any decisions. So yeah, we base what we do with regards to what we know. And boy, do we consider a lot of things in the course of our life.
Thinking about it has lead me to ponder on the issue of the internet. With regards to information, even a hundred encyclopedias could not compete with the internet. Dont you agree?
Most, if not all, definitely hold freedom to information in high regard. This, however, does not stop authorities and the like from creating bills which aim to censor the internet. The goal to shut down sites that are pornographic in nature and the sites run by terrorists and extremist hold water but not everything is as simple as that. There are many other factors involved.
There are various reasons for censoring the internet. But the main ones are only three: political reasons, protection of social norms, and for security reasons.
Of the three, I like the first reason least. I do not see how withholding information from the people can be good. If you think about it, censorship for political reasons usually occurs in countries where their rulers try to hold on to the power thus info is withheld from the people to prevent any uprising. It is simply about power and wanting to hold on to that power.
For the second reason, I do agree that it has its merits most especially if things like child pornography are involved. But then again, how about in other subject matters where people are highly divided like on the subject on religion and homosexuality? Should they be excluded from the society just because they are of different religion or of sexual orientation? Wouldnt that be unjust and contradicting to the principle on human equality as well?
Of the three, I find the last one acceptable. After all, we all want to be secured. But then again, not every form of censorship is limited to one category. This can be used as an excuse for authorities to extend the line of censorship. If that happens, what happens then?
In every action, there is sure to be benefits and disadvantages. Censorship is no different. Admittedly, it has pros. But for me, the cons outweigh it.
