Surat is also known as Suryapur and it is one of the major industrial cities and ports in India and also a second cleanest city

. Standard of life in this amazing city is very high and the population is over 4.5 million people. The importance of this city is growing daily because of two major industries that made Surat famous not only in India but around the globe as well and these industries are textile and diamond polishing and cutting industry.

Surat is located in South Gujarat and it is surrounded by The Gulf of Bombay and 4 districts, Dang, Narmada, Navsari and Baruch. The city is reachable by plain, train, boat and road which is one of the reasons why the economy is growing here so quickly. Surat is one of the best planned cities in India regarding to its infrastructure. The position of this city is very important because it is near to two metropolitan cities, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

This is one of the oldest Indian cities and it is mentioned in ancient books even but real growth of this city began during the 16th century with the coming of European traders which made this port very important. The city had a very important role in the freedom movement and went through many difficulties before India became independent.

Summers are very hot in Surat and temperature goes from 40 C to 45 C but during the night temperatures are lower and very pleasant. Winters are mild with temperature around 9 C which makes winter the best time to visit this city. If you plan your visit to Surat, make sure it is between October and March.

People who live in this city belong to many different religions and you will find here Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Sikhs. They are all very friendly and humane and most interesting is that you will find them celebrating festivals all together no matter the religion or class. Majority of the people that live in Surat are Gujarati and most of them are very skilled in all sorts of business.

Major industries here are diamond cutting and polishing and textile industry. Surat is well know by its synthetic textile that is exported around the globe and also across India. All major textile markets in India sell textile from Surat. This city is also famous by its saree production and the best sarees in India are manufactured in Surat. Usually sarees for weddings are bought here because of beautiful embroidery work made with gold and silver. Over 90% of the world's diamonds are cut in Surat and jewelry made here is exported around the world.

Food in Surat is excellent and offering a variety of dishes but mostly vegetarian. The cuisine is very rich with dishes made of fruits and vegetables because of the hot climate and lots of rain. Surati cuisine is famous by its snacks, pickles, ladoos, chutneys, theplas and a variety of breads served. It is a fest for the eyes and also the unique opportunity to taste unusual dishes prepared on sesame oil which makes them unique.
