Surgery For Problem Hemorrhoids

No matter how you look at it, hemorrhoids are a nuisance

. Of course, the fact of the matter is that everyone has hemorrhoids. They are clumps of vascular and protective tissue to aid in elimination. The problem begins when those areas become irritated and swollen. These areas can become extremely painful and bleed. They also are known to itch and make it difficult to go to the bathroom. These are the problems that we typically refer to when we say that we have hemorrhoids.

At least 50% of the American population has hemorrhoids sometime during their life. At any given time, at least 5% is suffering from the ailment. They are mostly common with Caucasians and affect both men and women equally.

People try many different ways to treat their hemorrhoids. There are some typical remedies that are recommended such as increasing fiber in your diet, exercising, using anti-inflammatory drugs, getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of water and taking warm baths. Many people find great relief by following these steps.

In drug stores, retail stores and online, you will find hundreds of over-the-counter remedies. The most frequently used remedies used today are wipes, suppositories and topical creams. Unfortunately, there is little evidence that these remedies work, but people who are in desperate situations will truly try anything. Sometimes zinc oxide cream or petroleum jelly is used, but only to hep relieve some of the irritability and itching from the hemorrhoids.

There are medical procedures that can help with hemorrhoids also. Internal hemorrhoids that are at least 1 cm above the dentate line can be treated with rubber band ligation. Tight bands are inserted around the hemorrhoids which result in the blood supply being cut off. Within five to seven days, the hemorrhoid will fall off. Nearly 87% of the people who opt for this type of surgery are cured, but sometimes they experience intense pain.

Sclerotherapy is another procedure often practiced to eliminate hemorrhoids. This is when a shrinking agent is injected into the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink as the vein walls collapse. This surgery is typically successful for up to 70% of people for up to four years after the procedure. Cauterization is the most serious of all treatments and will only be done when all other methods have failed.

There are various types of surgery that are used for hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoidectomy is when hemorrhoids are surgically removed from the body. A serious surgery, there is typically a lot of pain involved as well as a two to four week recovery period. Occasionally, the hemorrhoids can be stapled down instead of being completely removed. This is not as painful and there is a shorter recovery period than a hemorrhoidectomy.

If you have hemorrhoids that are making it impossible for you to live a normal life, then you should see a doctor. However, hemorrhoids are typically more of a nuisance than a life-threatening problem. They hurt, itch and make it difficult to go to the bathroom. Fortunately, there are many options to help people get relief from them so they can continue to live successful, enjoyable lives.
