Surrogate pregnancy is a form of infertility treatment that has helped many infertile couples be able to have the child they have always dreamed of

. Surrogate pregnancy is not always a good option for everyone though, so if you are considering using a surrogate to conceive a child, you will have to find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Those women that are good candidates for using a surrogate to have a child, are women that have damage to the uterus or have had to have all or part of their uterus removed due to injury, illness or disease. Women that cannot produce eggs from their ovaries, or produce poor-quality eggs that are not suitable for fertilization also make good candidates for using a surrogate mother. Additionally, women that are able to conceive, but cannot carry a child to term or women that will be at life-threatening risk if they do attempt to carry a child, also make good candidates for a surrogate pregnancy.

In the event that a woman is unable to produce an egg to be fertilized for a gestational surrogate, the surrogate mother will have to provide the egg, for a traditional surrogacy. In this type of surrogacy, the intended father of the child will supply the egg providing him with a genetic link to the child, but the intended mother will have no genetic link as her egg is not used. The couple that is seeking a surrogate as an infertility treatment will have to undergo a psychological evaluation, and if it is determined that the mother's lack of a genetic connection may bother her, it could be deemed that she is not a good candidate for the procedure, and may be directed to seek other options.

In many cases, if a woman could possibly benefit from other type of infertility treatment, she may also not be considered a good candidate for surrogate pregnancy, and it may be recommended that she try other infertility treatments before settling on surrogacy. Generally, surrogacy is used for those that have exhausted other treatment methods, and will be completely unable to conceive with any other fertility treatment.
