. In the old days, if you just hooked up your stereo speakers to the television through some sort of receiver, you were thought to be pretty high tech and ahead of the curve. But surround sound technology has really improved over the past decade or so and as it has gotten better, it has even gotten easier to utilize.

No matter whether it is because the general populace have in general become more tech savvy, or because the manufacturers realized that if they made the technology more convenient, they would sell a heck of a lot more units, who knows? But either way, the technology has gotten less complicated to manage and with just a few cables to plug in, you are ready to watch your favorite television shows and movies in superb surround sound. You actually do get a few choices when it comes to selecting a surround sound system.

There is one factor that will be universal though, is that you want to keep it HD and to do that you need to hook up the system to your television with an HDMI cable. There is a true HD version of a surround sound system, which includes two more side speakers over the traditional 5.1 channel systems that most people are familiar with. It is a 7.1 channel system and is a little more involved, but still can be hooked up by almost everybody.

The true test of your technological ability is whether or not you can position the speakers in the optimal locations. This isn't too difficult, but when running the wires around an occupied room, it can be difficult to conceal them all and keep them from running through an area that has foot traffic. The best way to do it is to run the wires through the walls or attic, or somehow conceal them behind some woodwork.

But this isn't always feasible and there are covers that you can purchase that stick on the wall and blend in much better than the bare wires. You just run them along baseboards or other low-profile areas. But you always want to take a little extra time to figure out where the speakers should be situated for optimum sound quality. If you are going to do this at all, you might as well do it the proper way.
