Survival May Depend On Your Ability To Cope With Loneliness
The results are in: loneliness can be hazardous to your health
. It may sound like something out of a Victorian romance but the results of widespread scientific research seems to show a direct correlation with loneliness and a whole slew of medical conditions. Many of the results of these studies are quite alarming, and they definitely make a compelling case for coping with loneliness.
In two studies published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in June 2012, it was claimed that people who are lonely are at increased risk of early death. One of the studies involved 45,000 subjects from the 45 and up age group who were either at risk for developing heart disease or were already diagnosed with the condition. Out of this group, it was found that those who lived without companionship were more likely to die from a heart attack, a stroke, or some other heart related condition than the test subjects who lived with friends or family.
These results support an earlier study conducted by researchers as the University of California. Headed by molecular biologist Steve Cole, the tests show that people who described themselves as being in a chronically lonely state were at greater risk for widespread inflammation and other conditions that could have a negative effect on blood vessels. If only for health reasons alone, it would therefore be beneficial to cope with loneliness in as effective a manner as possible.
In addition to the physiological factors that may affect health, loneliness may also include a variety of social factors in the equation. Dr. Carla M. Perissinotto, also from the University of California, stated that lonely people where less likely to seek medical attention than those who enjoyed a more active social life. Lonely people are in fact less likely to interact with the community in general, and this can cause them to neglect certain aspects of their health.
Coping with loneliness isn't exactly easy, and it becomes even more difficult the longer you remain in isolation. An essential step in coping with loneliness is breaking the cycle of loneliness and depression by whatever means necessary. The methods by which this can be done vary considerably from person to person, although a few basics tend to apply for everyone.
A simple, yet highly effective way to cope with loneliness is simply to increase instances of social interaction. You don't necessarily have to burn up the club circuit-unless you are so inclined of course-and even just a chat with an old friend or dinner with your family can be tremendously beneficial.
Pets can be amazingly effective at helping you cope with loneliness and a variety of other health conditions as well. Studies have also shown that pets have the remarkable ability to reduce blood pressure in humans, which gives pet ownership a distinct advantage over other methods for coping with loneliness.
In more extreme cases, you may have to seek professional help for coping with loneliness. Therapy is an option, but don't disregard the benefits of talking to a spiritual adviser or a mentor as well.
