Dogs can make good pets. In fact, they are considered to be man's best friend. But what if man's best friend suddenly turns against you and tries to attack you? I bet you can easily handle a small dog such as a Chihuahua or a Spitz. But what if your attacker is a trained Doberman or Rottweiler?
The first reaction of people when they are attacked by a large dog is to run. That is not advisable since any creature with four legs would be able to outrun any human being including you. Your best reaction should be standing still. It would seem ironic but dogs do not find motionless objects to be good targets.
Put your head down as the dog gets near you. Avoid eye contact at all cost since looking a predator in the eye will only arouse its aggression. The canine species considers not looking in the eye a sign of respect. When you look a dangerous dog in the eye its first reaction is to get defensive.
Sometimes, even the most ancient of tricks may fail to convince a dog that you are not a threat. When it decides to jump on you, its only aim is to knock you down. Never try to block the dog away or shove it with your hands. Doing so will only make it think that you're trying to fight it. Put your arms on your side or in front of your face and chest. Close your fist to avoid your fingers from being bitten off.
If the dog manages to knock you down on the ground, don't try to get up. Do you best to lay motionless and make sure you crawl yourself into a ball. Use your hands and arms to cover your face and neck and your knees to cover your mid section. Your attacker might just lose interest when it sees you there lying motionless.
Just like any other wild animals, dogs will never try to attack unless it feels like it is being threatened by you or other animals like itself. That is why your best defense against an attacking dog is to prove to it that you come in peace.
