Survival Tools - They Make Survival Easier
There are many different survival tools that serve to both increase your overall
odds of survival as well as just plain making life easier during an already stressful situation.
A good quality knife tops any list of survival tools. Your knife is your best friend in a survival situation. With it, you can make expedient shelters, skin game, cut firewood, and perform innumerable other tasks in the field. While it is certainly possible to "make do" without a knife, a good blade is truly one of the most important survival tools available.
When choosing a knife, look for one that is constructed with a full tang.
This means the blade goes all the way through the handle as one solid piece, rather than having a blade that is spot welded to a separate handle. A thick blade is strong and will withstand the heavy chopping of making firewood.
A wire saw is a tremendous help in cutting firewood. Look for something of high quality, rather than a cheap overseas knock off. They do make these with a heavier duty chain akin to an actual chainsaw as well. These cut very quickly and will handle heavier limbs than their thinner counterparts.
550 paracord is a wonderful addition to your list of survival tools. You want the real thing, not a cheap knock off. True paracord is composed of seven strands of nylon cord sheathed in an outer covering. The reason this is important is you can remove a section of one of the inner strands while leaving the overall cord intact. The cord itself is only about as thick as a heavy shoelace, yet incredibly strong. The inner strands can be used as makeshift fishing line and many other purposes. Some people weave the cord into bracelets or necklaces so as to always have some with them.
A sierra cup is another great survival tool. With it, you can boil water, cook food, even dig a hole. They are lightweight and will fit into all but the very smallest survival kit. Having two or three of them increases your options as well so you could devote one to cooking and another for dirtier chores.
However, the absolute most important survival tool rests between your ears. When in a survival situation, it is important to remain calm, cool, and collected. Panic leads to bad decisions. Sit down, take a few deep, calming breaths, and analyze your situation. Use common sense and logic to determine your course of action.
