Surviving A Winter Blizzard

The wintertime is one of the most dangerous times to face the elements

. As a result, a disaster occurring this time can mean death if you are not prepared.

When you are preparing for a possible emergency during the winter, the clothing you pack is critical to your survival. As you are preparing a 72 hour kit for each of your family members, make sure you include the proper winter clothing.

You should include a heavy coat, light jacket, a pair of pants, socks, underwear, long sleeved and warm shirts, a hat, gloves, and the proper foot gear. However, you must keep in mind that your children must be able to carry their own 72 hour kit.

In the event of an emergency, you will not be able to carry a child and three different 72 hour kits. The proper clothing can determine the survival of your family during the winter however.

Another element of the 72 hour kit that should not be forgotten is the proper food. During a winter emergency, you will need the calories in order to stay warm.

Make sure you pack plenty of food. This food should be non-perishable and well-packaged.

Freeze dried food is an excellent option because it often comes in prepared meals that you simply need to add water to. The ability to have a warm meal during the poor winter weather can provide a lot of comfort and can add to your ability to survive.

There are several different varieties of freeze dried food as well. You will have plenty of selection for picky children.

In addition, you should add medical supplies to each bag. You will not be able to depend on the emergency services to help you during a disaster.

For one thing, during the winter, the road conditions may be so bad that they will not be able to reach you. For another, during a disaster these services will be in very high demand.

They will not be able to help all of the people that will need to be helped. With your small medical knowledge and a first aid kit, you may be able to save someone's life until they can get the help that they need.

You will also need to pack water. The general rule is that you should have one gallon per person per day on hand for an emergency.

A radio is also essential to this kit. Make sure you have enough batteries stored as well so that you can stay connected with the world.

It is also likely that several family members will need things that are specific to them. For example, grandma may have medication she has to take and the baby will need diapers.

It is important that these things are packed as well. Another critical thing to have during an emergency is a means of communication.

Pack a cell phone into each 72 hour kit. Each cell phone should have a phone number to the other emergency cell phones, the normal phone numbers, and extended family members.

Sometimes it is not possible to call across town during an emergency, but it is possible to call someone outside of the disaster area. As a result, it will be very important to have a contact outside the area so you can meet up with family members if you get separated during the disaster.

Make sure that you discuss these plans with your family members so they know what to do during the emergency. You should also make plans about where you will meet.

Choose a location near your home, in a nearby town, and out of state. You will thank yourself when you need to use these plans later.

One of the disasters that may occur during the winter would be a sudden blizzard. Any winter storm can turn into a blizzard with little or no warning.

A blizzard is a winter storm with winds greater than 35 mph and almost no visibility due to extremely heavy snowfall. While it is against all safety standards, many people venture outside during a blizzard and get lost.

This is extremely dangerous and can result in your death as others will not be able to find you in the blizzard. If you must venture outside, you need to be properly prepared with the right clothing and have no other choice.

However, if you are properly prepared you will be able to survive. It will be uncomfortable at best, but surviving is key.
