Storms can be very dangerous
Storms can be very dangerous. Here in the Midwest, thunderstorms can be very violent, especially in the spring and summer.
Rain can pour down too hard for you to see the car in front of you if you're driving. Slow down to a crawl. However, I don't advise stopping. Because you don't know what drivers behind you will do, I can't advise pulling off to the side of the road, assuming that's even possible.
However, if you can pull into a parking lot of some kind or driveway, so you're out of the way of drivers behind you, that's a good idea.
Usually rain falling that hard does not last long, so just wait it out.
If there's lightning, stay in your car. You're safer there than outside in the open. But try not to touch anything that's metal.
Stay away from anything that acts as a natural lightning rod, such as isolated, tall trees, small structures out in the open and anything metal such as golf clubs and bicycles. Stay out of open areas yourself, if possible.
Tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons are varieties of storms where there is not only heavy rain, but extremely powerful wind as well.
Although the one typhoon I've lived through didn't seem to have much wind. It did rain heavily all through the night, as much as I recall. The next morning, electricity was off in the most of the area around me and I had to wade through thigh-high water in the streets.
Hopefully Katrina taught everybody that when the authorities say to evacuate, get your rear end out. The people who left New Orleans ahead of Katrina lived, and didn't have to ride boats through the streets. Any more questions?
Make good evacuation preparations before you leave. Keep your car in good working order, with a full tank of gas.
Store at least one 72 hour emergency kit in the trunk for every member of your family. Plus, water, a first aid kit, blankets, emergency flares and everything else you have room for.
Prepare your important computer files by keep backup copies stored on Carbonite, Amazon S3 or a similar service.
Think about your personal finances. A few days after Katrina, I had to give an emergency government check to a refugee from the hurricane. She received a government welfare check by direct deposit. When she told me that, I said, well just go to the nearest ATM machine and draw your cash out.
She told me she didn't have a debit card. In the 21st century, why would you have a checking account, especially one that receives your only income, but not a debit card?
What was even worse, her financial institution was a dinky little credit union that was only one building in the middle of New Orleans, so no doubt its computers were all underwater.
I realize there are good things about credit unions, but I'm glad my debit card is from a major bank and will work at ATM machines around the world.
Have a plan where to go, and make sure all out of town family and friends know where you're headed, so they're not watching the news on TV and worrying about you.
