Fosamax linked to Serious Side Effects, Including Spontaneous Bone Fracture of the Femur:

Fosamax or Alendronate (generic name) is manufactured by Merck. Nearly 40 million prescriptions have been written for this drug that alters the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body and makes bones stronger. Fosamax slows down bone loss (drug inhibits bone reabsorption) while increasing bone mass that may prevent bone fractures in post-menopausal women. Fosamax is also used to treat Padgets Disease, a disease that is characterized by accelerated turnover of bone that results in production of new bone that is abnormal in structure. A study in 2008 published in the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma links the osteoporosis drug Fosamax to a rare type of fractures of the femur.

According to the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, there is also a connection between Fosamax and a serious bone disease called osteonecrosis of the jaw (dead jaw). In July 2005, this prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Merck Pharmaceuticals to issue a warning to healthcare providers and to update Fosamax package labeling to make reference to osteonecrotic jaw side effect. Other Fosamax side effects include severe joint, bone, and muscle pain, and joint swelling. Merck has already paid out millions and has reserved 60 million dollars for future litigation costs relating to Fosamax side effects including hip, shoulder, and femur fractures.
