This versatile SUV is known by many names, in North America its known as Sidekick, in Europe its called Vitara and in Japan it is named Escudo. Amazingly, apart from Suzuki, Vitara is sold under multiple owners like GMC, Pontiac and Mazda. The fact that multiple manufacturers used Vitara under their respective badges is testament to its superior off road and SUV capabilities.

Production started officially in 1988 and is continued till today, though now it is famously known as Grand Vitara. First generation (1989-1998) Vitara was produced in 2 door and 4 door body styles with options for 3,4 speed auto and 5 speed manual gearboxes. 1.3, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol engines were offered with varying horse power. Additionally the two door version was offered in convertible and in SUV modes. Second generation (1999-2005) was launched in 3 and 5 door body trims with options of 5 speed manual or 4 speed auto gearboxes. Second generation Suzuki Vitara engine was launched in 1.6, 2.0 and 2.5 litre petrol engine capacities along with a 2.0 litre turbo charged diesel engine.

Third and current generation (2005-present) Vitara is launched in 3 and 5 door SUV body styles with options for 4 speed auto, 5 speed manual or 5 speed auto gearbox. 1.6, 2.0, 2.4and 2.7 litre petrol engines were offered along with 1.9 litre turbo charged and 3.2 litre V6 diesel engines. Some famous Suzuki Vitara Engine codes used by 3 generations of Vitara are as follows. G16A Engine; this 1.6 litre 16 valve petrol engine was based on Injection technology and was produced from 1991 till 1998 then again from 1998 till 2004. G16A Engine (8 valve); this 8 valve 1.6 litre carburetor based petrol engine was developed from 1988 till1993.


G16A Engine (Simple petrol engine); this variant of G16A Engine was produced from 1991 till 1998 and then again from 1998 till 2004. It had similar features as the one discussed earlier. H20A Engine; this 2.0 litre straight V6 with 24 valves was based on Injection technology and was produced from 1997 till 2003. RF T Engine; it was a 2.0 litre turbo charged EFI engine, produced first from 1995 till 1997 then from 1997 till 2000. H25A Engine; it was a massive 2.5 litre petrol V6 with 24 valves and was based on Injection technology. H25A Engine was produced in 1998 and 1999 only.
