Looked at on a map, many Australian towns and cities seem almost too remote to be sustainable
. Yet they have a healthy year-round population which, in many cases, grows considerably during holiday seasons. Broome, on the northern coast of Western Australia, and 1,300 miles from the state capital, Perth, is one such town.
First visited by William Dampier in 1688, the town's fortunes are founded on the pearl fishing industry, and rich beds are located offshore. The town is situated on a peninsula, so has water on both its sides. Thousands of visitors are attracted annually by the prospect of watching millions of migrating wading or shore birds which head here from their breeding grounds in northern Asia.
They also come to Broome for one of the most magnificent beaches in Australia. Cable Beach is 15 miles (22.5 kilometres) long and almost perfectly flat. Broome enjoys among the warmest year-round average temperatures of anywhere in Australia, of around 90 degrees Farenheit. Its rainy season runs from January to March.
Among the pearl fishers who have come to Broome and settled here down the generations is a large number of Japanese natives. Such has been the scale of their presence, and their role in the pearl fishing industry, that a dedicated cemetery has been established for them, which contains the graves of more than 900 divers who lost their lives in the search for pearls.
Thanks to its tropical climate, Broome is a very popular holiday destination, and at its peak, the number of visitors trebles the local population, from the year-round figure of nearly 14,500 to more than 45,000. The number of year-round residents is, however, rising quickly, and the town is one of the fastest growing in Australia, using the income from the tourists who visit to diversify its trading base.
These residents enjoy their relative isolation, but are also grateful for the efficient worldwide delivery services which help them keep in touch with friends, family and business associates near and far. Those facilities will become increasingly important as the town undergoes its steady expansion, and word spreads about the excellent living and working conditions which exist there.
Broome has an international airport, which is Australia's 20th busiest, and handled nearly 400,000 passengers in 2008/09. It is an important lifeline for the town, keeping it connected with the rest of Australia, and allowing the inward transport of international parcels from around the world.
International couriers, with their extensive network of services linking places far and wide, provide
Broome parcel delivery services. More information about the services available can be found online.
