However, before you start it is worthwhile taking a few swimming lessons to improve your technique. There are many styles that you can use to swim however, the following style is one of the most popular.

The Breast Stroke

This style is good if you are starting out with swimming as it is one of the easiest to do. The breaststroke uses two thirds of lower body and one third from your arms to move you forward. Compared to other styles it is much quieter because your arms move under the surface of the water. The following are a few guidelines on how to do the breaststroke.

* The breast stroke is about quality rather than quantity. You will be able to travel a greater distance by extending the length of your stroke rather than the number of strokes you do.

* When you finish a stroke bring your feet together and let your body glide. Complete the gliding movement before you pull your arms for the next stroke.

* Make sure that you hold your shoulders back and aim to bring your shoulder blades together at the end of each pulling motion.

* Do not over arch your back through each stroke and ensure your core abdominal muscles are contracted inwards.

* Make sure the hips are kept high in the water as this will prevent your legs from lagging behind you.
