Swimming Tips To Better Form
Swimming, like any other sport, takes hard and regular training if one is looking to compete at a satisfying level
. It can become very frustrating to consistently end up in the wake of another at a meet. Often times, the frustration can even turn to depression and foster the thoughts of quitting altogether. Perhaps all that is needed are to follow a few tips that will help to conquer those doubts of success and produce a better competitive swimming form.
The number one thing that must be tackled religiously is to swim frequently and consistently. All swimmers go through periods of doubt or feelings of giving up but stopping altogether is the worst thing to do. Physical stamina and strength, technique and form will all suffer if not practiced at regular and frequent intervals. Also, consider that swimming shorter workouts more often produces better results than longer workouts done fewer times.
The greatest thing a competitive swimmer can do once hitting the water is to work on technique and form. Without these, the swimmer is doomed to come up short. Technique and form wins races, not strength or fast strokes and kicks. Regardless of the workout speed, proper technique and form should be focused on throughout the program. Also, technique drills should be practiced at some point during every workout. This helps to drive the correct movements into one's head so that they come naturally during competition.
Once or twice a week, one should incorporate into the routine a challenging workout. This is where the extra effort needs to be exerted to produce better speed and power. Technique and form still need to be focused on but that should fall to second priority during the power workouts. Endurance is another key element in winning competitions. Technique and form will cause you to go greater distances while burning less energy but endurance is what's needed when headed down the home stretch.
A good training tool to use for endurance sessions is an aqua heart rate monitor. These clip onto the goggle strap and rest against the temple while the electrode clips to the ear lobe to measure pulse. One can feel their pulse while training and so can increase or decrease exertion according to the pulse rate.
Another important part of competition is a winning streamline. This is considered technique or form but pointing it out here is invaluable to taking that award. The push off the wall should be done the exact same way every time as if coming out of a turn. This technique should be practiced each and every time a turn is made. Another tip for streamlining, keep the stomach sucked in to give less resistance and more distance in your glide.
