Switching To E-cigs: When Will I Break Even?

Everyones primary reason for switching to electronic cigarettes is different

. Some are seeking the freedom of being able to have nicotine in places where it was previously not allowed, while others are hoping to get rid of yellow stains on their teeth and that infamous foul cigarette smoke odor.

One of the biggest reasons people switch, though, is the cost. Any way you look at it, electronic cigarettes cost less in the long term than traditional smoking. Even with eventual equipment replacement and supplies like pre-filled cartomizers, and even after a large initial investment in a starter kit, if you keep at it, you will eventually see your savings start to mount.

That all sounds great, but I need to see some math

Of course you want some solid, concrete numbers. OK, in the interest of being as critical as possible of the potential savings, lets assume you live on a lower-cost-of-living area of the United States. Probably the least you will spend on a pack of cigarettes in the U.S. is $5.50. Lets also assume for the sake of simplicity that you smoke a pack of cigarettes per day, with an average month length of 30 days.

$5.50 x 30 = $165

So assuming you live in an area of the U.S. where the cost of living is low, there is your baseline. Of course, it costs up to twice that much to smoke in some areas, so for a few of you reading this, your baseline is closer to $330.

Using the $165 number, we can already see a guaranteed savings with switching to electronic cigarettes. You would be hard-pressed to spend that much on cartomizers once you have purchased your initial equipment.

Before we start calculating on those terms though, we have to account for the initial investment, which may set you back that first month. You will need some equipment for vaping, which means a starter kit.

You could go with the lowest level starter kit available, but that is likely to end up leading to more spending later. You will need at least two batteries when you start vaping so that you can have one available while the other charges.

Most e-cig starter kits also come with some starter pre-filled cartomizers, but the supply is not likely to be enough for a month of vaping, so you will also need to account for extras. To show the true extent of the savings, for this exercise we are going to assume you are buying a fully-equipped starter kit with all of the bells and whistles. We will make it a very expensive one, say about $200 for a starter kit that includes every kind of case and charger you could ask for and at least two batteries and 15 cartomizers. You will want another 15 cartomizers for the month, so add another $40.

It seems pretty clear you are not going to break even that first month. You have spent $240, putting you in the hole by $75. The question is: how long until you make that back in savings and come out ahead?

You will break even within 2 months

So, on month one you end up $75 in the hole. Month two comes around and you need to buy supplies. At $40 for 15 cartomizers, you are looking at $80 for a months worth. This means that at the end of month two, you have spent a total of $320 on vaping. At this point with traditional smoking, you would have spent $330.

Yes, you are reading that right. At the end of month two, you are already in the black on your e-cig purchases by $10 .

By the end of month 3, you have saved $95, with that number going up by $85 each month. At the end of a year, you will have saved $860 by making the switch to vaping.

Of course, you will need to spend some of this on replacement parts like new batteries every once in a while, or on trying out alternate flavors of e-cig vapor, but even with that, the savings are significant, especially when you consider the numbers here are based on the cheapest cigarettes in the country.

The bottom line: If you are a smoker looking to save money, you can do so by switching to electronic cigarettes.
