Sydney's most luxurious hotels

Finding deluxe Sydney hotels is easy; after all, this is a city known for its style. Picking the place that suits you best is a little harder. It's all a matter of personal taste, starting with the two main dividing factors: traditional and contemporary.

If you're a traditionalist at heart, stand-out options include the exquisite Observatory, owned by the Orient Express, and the superb Sir Stamford at Circular Quay. Both these boutique establishments offer classic decor and service of the highest standards. The Observatory, near the famous Rocks district, has won more awards than any other Australian hotel, and the collection of art at Sir Stamford includes some of the country's finest works.

At the other end of the design spectrum is The Establishment: small, perfect and incredibly hip - splash out on a penthouse for ultimate style, but don't worry too much: all the rooms here are fabulous. The same can be said for a number of other wildly fashionable and chic boutique hotels: the Taj group's uber-cool Blue at Woolloomooloo wharf, the disarmingly quirky Medusa in Darlinghurst, the sensational Storrier at Potts Point, and the dazzling Diamant in Kings Cross among them. For beach-lovers, there's the Ravesi's at Bondi.

Larger but every bit as contemporary is the Amora Jamison, where style and fashion reign supreme. And, if you can't pick between old and new, the Westin offers both: classically styled Heritage rooms in the city's grand old General Post Office, and modern Tower rooms with stunning views. Similarly, Sebel Pier One at the Rocks blends Federation design with contemporary chic: an ideal combination for the undecided.

Then there are the other big, international names - Hilton, Shangri La, Four Seasons, InterContinental, Marriot, Hyatt, and more, all of which provide superb accommodation and excellent amenities in prime locations.

There are also a few other less known Sydney hotels. One of which has an international offering, but one that's a little less well-known, is the stunning Swissotel, whose sophisticated lodgings and spa are within walking distance of many major sights.

But the choice doesn't stop with classic or modern. Some styles bridge the gap, and one of these is Art Deco: an era beautifully represented, in fine minimalist fashion, at the gorgeous and centrally located Grace.

Sydney attracts many global celebrities, and if you want to catch a glimpse of one, you might like to try the glamorous Park Hyatt at The Rocks or Quay Grand Suites, right by the Opera House.

Finally, if you're intending to spend money like there's no tomorrow, there's really only one contender: the master suite at the Hilton. For a million Australian dollars, you can enjoy two nights of sheer splendour and collect some extraordinary souvenirs: a Bentley Continental convertible, a 12-carat diamond, a Brietling for Bentley wristwatch and tailor-made suit among them. Obviously, some superb meals are also included, but that's not all. Three floors of the hotel - one hundred guest rooms - will be placed at your disposal for family and friends, and there'll be a luxury party to entertain them. Tempted?
