Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels that can be found in the lower portion of the rectum and are termed internal hemorrhoids. The only indication that one has internal hemorrhoids is the presence of bright red blood in the stool or dripping into the toilet bowl. The bleeding is usually self-limiting.

When the internal hemorrhoids protrude out of the anus, they are called prolapsed hemorrhoids. The symptoms of these prolapsed hemorrhoids are pain, irritation, burning sensation and itchiness especially when feces leak out of the anus in addition to the release of mucus by the inflamed cells. The trauma can cause bleeding as well as pain when stool passes. The lining of the rectum is pulled down. It secretes mucus and moistens the anus and the surrounding skin. Stool can also leak into the anal skin. As a result of the presence of wetness and stool, the area will itch and the skin can become very painful. The prolapsed hemorrhoids usually return into the anal canal or rectum due to the muscle functions or can be pushed back inside with a finger. However, with the next bowel movement, they can again protrude out of the anus.
