Symptoms of Lice - Do You Know What They Are?

Head lice are parasites that often reside on the scalp of an infected person. Once settled, this person will then become their host and nesting place, where they can lay eggs to increase their number. It is essential to come up with an effective treatment that can cure a head lice infestation. This can affect the entire household and be very bothersome at the same time.

When dealing with head lice, you should be aware that this does not mean that you lack personal hygiene. In fact, lice prefer clean hair, as this can provide them with a healthy blood supply and the warmth that they need to survive. Lice do not fly nor jump. They are transmitted through head-to-head contact, or by lending your personal stuff to someone infested with it.

Itching is the main symptom of lice. But, it is very possible that a person can be infested with lice and not even know. To confirm that you are infested with head lice, make sure to check for nits stuck at the hair shaft or for wandering lice on the scalp. Another symptom of lice is moving dandruff. Of course, dandruff does not move. These are actually the lice moving.

Treatments for lice and nits include various home remedies, such as white vinegar. Apply a small amount of white vinegar onto the hair and scalp and allow it to seep in for 30 minutes before rinsing. When rinsed, use a nits comb to work through the hair. Make sure to divide the hair into sections, so that you will not miss an area. As an alternative, you may also use mayonnaise or olive oil.

Treating symptoms of lice with chemical-based shampoos can also be helpful, although this procedure is not recommended. These chemicals may be harmful, particularly to children who have a sensitive scalp. But, if you prefer this kind of treatment, make sure to carefully follow the instructions given on the label to safely perform the treatment. Over-the-counter medicines are helpful as well but, just like the chemical-based shampoos, are not recommended due to safety issues.

If you want to make sure that you are treating the symptoms of lice in a safe manner, you should opt for alternative home remedies instead. Some home head lice remedies that you may use include various essential oils, such as lavender oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil and neem seed oil. In addition, butter and petroleum jelly can be used as well. Nit combs are also useful when it comes to eliminating head lice. Besides the ordinary plastic or metal nits comb, electronic head lice combs can also be used. The electronic lice comb works by literally electrocuting head lice and killing them.

When you are done treating the person infested, make sure to treat their personal stuffs as well. Stuffed animals, recently used clothing and bed linings should be washed and dried on a hot setting. Combs, brushes and other hair accessories should be placed in boiling water or in a sealed plastic bag to make sure that the lice and nits will be killed. It is also important to vacuum your furniture, car upholstery, carpets and curtains to make sure that no head lice or nits are left alive.
