Syringe Disposal - Common Safe Syringe Disposal Procedures

Many medical conditions require the use of a syringe to administer some type of medication

. After the medication has been administered the syringe must be disposed of promptly in order to avoid a dangerous situation. Used syringes can cause injuries or carry blood borne pathogens such as AIDS, HIV or hepatitis that can be spread by just one small prick of a used syringe. To avoid putting yourself or someone you know into this type of dangerous situation it is important to practice properly disposing of your used syringes.

Every state in the United States has some type of safe syringe disposal law that has been put into place by the state's health department. These laws outline the proper procedures for safely disposing of used syringes. Some states require that the syringes be disposed of in approved containers and left at drop off locations for the used syringe containers where they are properly disposed of by medical professionals. Other states only require that the syringes be properly secured in a closed container to avoid any accidental contact with the used syringes. Even though the disposal procedures might vary from state to state there are still certain precautions that a person, no matter what state they are in can practice.

Common syringe disposal procedures should be practiced regardless of where you are located to prevent the risk of injury to other unsuspecting people. The most basic disposal procedure includes that of keeping all used syringes in a safe, closed topped container that is clearly marked with a biohazard sign. The closed topped container prevents the syringes from accidentally falling out and causing someone to prick themselves with the syringe. When the container is full it is recommended that the top be sealed with tape and then proper disposal procedures can be followed according to state law. State laws can require the container be left at a used syringe drop off, put aside for pick-up by a state official or simply tossed in the trash.

Safe syringe disposal practices should be used by anyone that relies upon a syringe for administering their medications. Even though you may believe that the syringes you use do not contain any type of dangerous diseases, an unsuspecting person has no way of knowing that. By practicing safe disposal procedures you protect yourself and others from facing the risk of contracting a disease or injuring themselves by accidentally sticking themselves with the used syringe.
