TV Extras and Film Extras - What To Prepare For While Shooting On Location

The working day will almost certainly demand getting out of bed very early! Call times for Film Extras and TV Extras may be as early as 7.30am, perhaps even earlier!. It is essential to show up on time so that the crew appreciate that they have a complete complement of Film Extras and TV Extras and do not need to waste time attempting to locate missing people.

When you are filming on location you will frequently discover that the best way to locate a film set is usually to simply search for a sizable bunch of trucks, coaches, vans and anything that appears as if it belongs on a film set! If it's located within a remote location, or is very difficult to find, it will be highly likely that local signs will have been set up on all the approach the roads.

Once you've "checked in" your schedule can vary. You may be directed straight to the wardrobe department or makeup department (if required), or possibly told to have breakfast, or even chill out in the bus'. The usual hub' on any film shoot is usually a double-decker bus, in which cast and crew hang out between shoots.

The Wardrobe Department

Unless you are employed on a period piece or maybe a production that will require a very specialised type of outfit, the probabilities are you will have discussed what kind of clothes to wear ahead of time. There are certain "No No's" so far as outfits go. It's good to bear in mind that you're not the star of the production and whatever you wear must not be created specifically to help you differentiate yourself in the crowd! Hence, it's best to try and wear muted colours, and obviously nothing over the top or outrageous, except in cases where, you've been asked for precisely that! It's always best to stay clear of wearing anything that will cause a strobing' effect on television screens such as checks or slim stripes.

For Film Extras and TV Extras employed on a production that will require a precise style of outfit, a visit to the wardrobe department is going to be required. The likelihood is they will have spoken to you in advance concerning measurements. Nonetheless, it is important to know just what your own measurements are at any given time, for instance your height, chest/bust, waist, hips, hat size, inside leg measurement and shoe size. If you happen to be just like me, your measurements may vary from time to time and so it is advisable to be sure you understand whenever they have altered!

The Make Up Department

Unless you're going to be required for close-up shots, it is unlikely that you will require any type of makeup. For anybody who is picked for close ups, the most you could expect is a dab of powder here and there to matt' your face which will help prevent shine. Even so, just like wardrobe, for anybody who is filming a costume drama, or possibly a production that would need a unique look', a trip to makeup will almost certainly be required. If it is a period programme you may even get to put on a wig or (for the men) side burns, moustache or maybe a beard!

The Food Department

Location shoots are very well known for serving up frequent supplies of food, usually of very good quality and in general, completely free! For Film Extras and TV Extras performing a long day, together with regular lengthy gaps in between filming, it's all too easy to over indulge and consume an excessive amount of food as a result of the regular supply of goodies in between main meals! Whenever possible resist getting greedy, or eating out of boredom, since you can wind up becoming sluggish and even more irritating, develop chronic heartburn. It really doesn't help when you are ultimately requested on set, only to stand there keeping back hiccups or much worse!
