TV show sees diamond ring proposal

A TV show has seen two of its stars get engaged - and in classic tradition

, a diamond ring was presented to the bride-to-be.

ABC's The Bachelorette saw Roberto Martinez ask for Ali Fedotowsky's hand in marriage.

For the occasion, the romantic groom in waiting selected the piece of jewellery in platinum.

According to a statement made by Neil Lane, the man who designed the item, the pair are happy in love.

He said: "This confident, successful and sensitive woman was ready to find love - and embarked on a romantic journey as she met 25 handsome and intelligent men.

"As the Bachelorette got to know each one, she continued to narrow the field. They travelled to exotic locations and spent time getting to know each other; she introduced them to her family and met some of theirs."

Mr Lane has also created jewellery for a number of famous names, including Hollywood actresses Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock and Kate Hudson.

The giving of diamond rings for engagements is a tradition with a long pedigree and there is a whole range available for romantic diehards.

And these days it is not only women who receive items such as this to mark the start of the countdown to getting hitched.

Men are increasingly keen to get their own pieces of bling to wear to display their love and commitment to their other halves.

This trend is being propelled in part by the rising number of male celebrities who don jewels, rings, bracelets and necklaces in front of the cameras.

Commentators have suggested this has illustrated to men that getting such items is not necessarily just for the fairer sex but rather is something that everyone can enjoy.

Footballers at this year's World Cup in South Africa were among those who showed their necklaces and other decorations off.
