Take A Break: Create Your Own Perfect Staycation
There is just not enough extra money and even less spare time
. These are the two things I hear most often from friends when we talk about needing or wanting a vacation from our everyday lives. We all seem to want to escape to a new, exciting locale for one reason or another. Some of us find exploring a new cuisine and culture to be enticing. A couple of history buffs I know are most interested in visiting the monuments, museums, and buildings that make a place meaningful. All of us agree that some rest and relaxation regardless of destination is truly one of the best parts of a break. So this is why we have come to embrace the idea of the staycation. For those who aren't familiar with the idea, here's a simple description that you can take as far as might work for you and your situation. Basically, you choose to take a vacation in the place you already live. Schedule yourself some time off of work, school, or other obligations and enjoy the surroundings you may not even know are there. Below are a few ideas to get you started on what can be one of the most affordable trips you've had, both financially and timewise.
Let's start with what I consider to be the best part of vacation: food and fun! Even if your own town is on the smaller side, chances are you are within a half day's drive to a larger city with perhaps more options on the menu. Ask adventurous dining friends what spots they've tried and would recommend or do an internet search to find good reviews of various ethnic restaurants. If they are indeed a little farther from home, then add to the fun and make a day road trip out of trying something tasty and different for lunch. It's easy to use modern technology to map out a driving route to your destination. Depending on your region and scenic preferences, you might be able to choose between main freeways or less common highways and country roads. You can customize your trip to stop at beautiful vistas and viewing areas along the way or maybe focus on shopping destinations for the trip home. Having a new dining experience can make you feel you've traveled to another country if even for just an hour or two and is one of the most time friendly ways to experience other parts of the world.
For those wanting to learn a little more about the historical significance of their hometown or surrounding area, then inquiring at the local chamber of commerce or library is a perfect place to start your educational staycation. There you might find information about museums, art galleries, and buildings that you never knew were there. Many times these are smaller types of museums ran by volunteers and docents who are very enthusiastic about their information and want to share as much with you as you'd like to learn. You might discover the origins of your town's name or source of industry. Perhaps you never knew just why the railroad decided to run through, what wartime battles were fought nearby, or that an artist used your region's landscape for inspiration. Even just a day or two of time to explore can lead to much more knowledge of how the place you enjoy life came to be.
If complete rest and relaxation is what you find yourself craving then look to a few traditional daily or short term places for pampering. Again, use a search engine or the praise of trusted friends to find a day spa in your area. Spending a bit of money on a day of massage, manicure, or a steam sauna is still much less than you'd need for an exotic resort across the ocean and you'll feel rejuvenated in less than 24 hours. Those lucky enough to live within a few hours drive of a nice water spot can take a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and a great book to get lost in for an even less expensive one day disconnect from the busy world. Sometimes we need more than a day though and that's when you might want to look for a local yet hidden away bed and breakfast to spend a night or two. You'll be fed wonderful food and have the comfort of quality furnishings without needing to clean and cook for yourself. There are also many bed and breakfast options that combine beautiful architecture and history with their peaceful accommodations. These are perfect for the staycationer that wants to indulge their desire for pleasing aesthetics with the want for quiet rest.
Such as with any vacation, these are starter ideas and your own staycation will need just a little planning. It's worth it when you come across the adventure, knowledge, or peaceful hideaway you've been hoping for that also fits your own time and monetary budget. Bon Voyage!
