For example, stand in the middle of a room. With your back to the door, ask your loved one to randomly open and close it normally. You should not know when it is opening or closing, but once you hear it, you can say so. If you cannot hear a door closing, that is a good indication of a problem.

If you are alone, try this one. Stand on a tile or other hard surface. Be sure you are not on carpeting. Take a coin in your hand. Hold it at about shoulder height. Drop it to the floor. Can you hear when it touches the ground? If not, that is an indication that there may be something wrong with your ability to hear well.
