Established in 1837, The Public Garden was the first botanical garden in the United States. The garden has an area known as The Common- a wide open space is home to a lake, over which crosses a suspension bridge, and a four acre pond whose resident swans are quite an attraction. Tourists also come here to take a ride in the Swan Boats. A bronze statue of George Washington stands regally on the west part of the park.

A wide variety of local and exotic trees can be discovered at the Garden. Scenic weeping willows surround the lagoon, with graceful elms dotted along the pathways.. An abundance of flowers are seen here, most notably roses of every colour and variety. Each season sees different kinds of flowers in bloom. The statue of a row of ducks is located within the park as well as many statues depicting distinguished Americans of yore, providing great subjects for photography. The skyline of Boston's financial district can also be seen from the garden.

The Garden is 24 acres and square shaped. Originally a salt marsh, and has been declared a National Historic Landmark since 1987. The garden is maintained by the city of Boston and can be reached easily via the Arlington station.
