No one wants to be stranded on the side of the road, but if you take time to take care of your car, from the windshield wipers to the electrical systems to the fog lights, your car will perform well for you.
What is the Electrical System of Your Car?
Under the hood, your car boasts an electrical system that consists of a battery, spark plugs, spark plug wires, an alternator, and a fuse box. The battery is the powerhouse for your car. Its main purpose is to provide a charge for the alternator, which is connected to the battery by a belt. Checking your electrical systems should be a major part of your general car maintenance routine. It would be pointless to check all of the parts of the car and not check the part of the car that powers it. Your mechanic can provide this service for you if you are not mechanically inclined. The benefit of having a professional handle this is that they will have the knowledge and experience needed to be able to diagnose and repair the problems. These systems can be confusing, as there are many wires and other components to contend with during an inspection. The Power of the Battery
The battery is a closed environment that houses six cells stacked with positive and negative lead plates that are separated by insulators. The cells sit in a solution of sulfuric acid and water. The energy to power the car comes from the cells inside the battery. The battery also provides power for devices such as the radio, defroster, windshield wipers, and the heating system. Make it a point to test the battery often. The easiest way to do this is to turn on your headlights before you switch the ignition. If you notice that your lights are brighter after you turn on the car, then you may have an issue with the battery.
What about the Alternator and Other Parts?
The alternator is the mechanism that produces the electricity that controls the charge that is being stored in the battery in order to power electrical devices, such as the engine controls and the ignition. A belt connects the alternator to the engine and converts the AC power that it produces into DC power to be used by the car. The fuse box is a small box that holds the fuses for every electrical component to your car. If one of the fuses blows, you can simply open the panel and replace it with a new one. The spark plugs and wires should be checked because they make sure that your engine starts on the coldest days. Spark plug and wire inspections should be done regularly to keep an eye out for corrosion and other damage.
